May 22nd 2014 -- Mets 5, Dodgers 3

Thursday night in Flushing Juan Lagares hit an RBI single to score Wilmer Flores snapping a 3 all tie in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Mets beat the Dodgers 5-3.  Jonathon Niese was the beneficiary going 7 strong allowing 3 runs on 4 hits getting the win. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st when Adrian Gonzalez hit a sac Fly to score Chone Figgins. The Mets tied the game in the 2nd getting to Zach Greinke when Eric Campbell hit a sac fly to score Curtis Granderson. The Mets took at 3-1 lead in the 5th on a RBI double by Niese and an error by former Met Justin Turner allowed Niese to score and it was 3-1. Turner got his revenge in the 7th when he connected off Niese for his first home run as a Dodger and the game was tied at 3. Lagares made it 4-3 Mets in the bottom of the 7th. The Mets got an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th when Granderson tripled scoring David Wright from first to cap the scoring.  Niese walked 3 and struck out 5 improving to 3-3 on the year. Chris Perez took the loss he falls to 0-2. Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched a scoreless 8th and Jenrry Mejia pitched the 9th for this 2nd major league save. The Mets collected 8 hits on the night, Wright and Granderson led the way with 2 apiece, starting his first game in left field, Campbell made a key play in the top of the 8th doubling off Yasiel Puig form 2nd base, who earlier had made an amazing catch on a ball by Flores, to end the inning. The Mets are now 21-25 on the year and 10-14 at Citi Field.  Friday night the Diamondbacks come to town for a holiday weekend series, Bartolo Colon (3-5 5.34) goes for the Mets, Chase Anderson (2-0 5.06) goes for Arizona.

  1. While old hand Grandy, who I was very critical of, continues to rebound, my underdog trio of Flores, Lagares, and Campbell all contributed last night. Flores would have had a real good nite if he had not been Puig-ed.

    Excuse me now, I have to go out to pick up a few cans of Campbell's Cream of the Crop soup. That soup's a winner, baby.

  2. The secret of this game was the pitching. Keep the opponent at 3 runs or under works most of the time.

    I hope that the Mets continue the hot bats.
