Wednesday afternoon in a matinee at Citi Field, The Mets
with the aid of a pair of errors, wild pitches and the long ball beat the
Pirates 5-0. The Mets take two out of three from the Bucs. In the bottom of the
2nd Lucas Duda walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch by Charlie
Morton, went to third on a grounder by Ruben Tejada and scored on another wild
pitch by Morton to make it 1-0. In the
second Daniel Murphy was safe at first on a throwing error by Pedro Alvarez and
then missed throw by Jody Mercer at 2nd landed Murph on 3rd
with what Mets announcer Gary Cohen called a “Little League Triple”. David
Wright singled scoring Murphy to make it 2-zip. In the 6th Wright connected off
Morton for a solo homer (4) to make it 3-0. Lucas Duda gave the Mets the 5 run
win with a two run homer (7) in the bottom of the 8th, all this in support of Bartolo
Colon who was masterful as he went 7 1/3 scoreless allowing just 5 hits while
tossing 121 pitches, walking just 1 and striking out a season high 9. Colon got the win he improves to 4-5. It the top of the 6th Colon reached
career strikeout 2000 when he struck out Ike Davis looking. Morton falls to
1-7. Jeurrys Familia got the last two outs of the 8th and finished
the ninth for the save. His 1st on the year. In the bottom of the 8th,
Familia also got his first major league hit. The Mets have now won 2 straight
and stand at 24-28 on the year and 13-17 at home. Thursday the Mets travel
south to start a 5 game weekend series in Philadelphia which includes a make up
game Monday from a rain out on April 30th. Zach Wheeler (1-5 4.63) goes for the Mets, David Buchanan
(1-0 3.60) goes for the Phillies.
