Friday night in
Denver, for the second night in a row the Rockies made quick work of a Met
starter, this time Zach Wheeler as the Mets lose big 10-3. The Mets drew first blood in the top of the
first when Juan Legares scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. The inning might
have been bigger, but Daniel Murphy had his consecutive stolen base streak
snapped when he was gunned down trying to steal third. After that it was mostly all Colorado as they
scored 4 times in the bottom of the first, twice in the bottom of the 2nd
and 1 more in the 4th to rough up Wheeler who had his shortest outing
of the year. Trailing 7-1 in the top of
the 6th Curtis Granderson got to Jorge De La Rose for a two run
homer (2) to make it 7-3. The Rockies
made it a laugher as they got to Carlos Torres for 3 runs in his 2 innings of
work to close the scoring. Charlie
Blackman had 3 hits including his 6th homer and drove in 2, Troy
Tulowitzki went 3 for 4 with 3 rbi, Justin Morneau and Wilin Rosario each drove in
2 apiece. Wheeler lasted just 4 innings,
allowing 7 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned walking 2 and striking out 1. He takes the
loss falling to 1-3. De La Rosa gets the win improving to 3-3. The Mets managed 9 hits in the loss with 2
hits piece by Granderson, David Wright and the red hot Legares. The Mets start out the road trip 0-2 and now
stand at 15-13 on the year and 7-5 on the road. Saturday night it’s game 3 of
the series. Jenrry Mejia (3-0 3.49) goes
for the Mets, Franklin Morales (3-1 4.40) goes for the Rockies.
Likely no effect on final score, and God bless Murph for his stolen base streak, but I would not have run there, Murph. Against this Rockie team, they need big innings.
