The Savannah Sand Gnats finished off a three-game sweep of the Delmarva Shorebirds with a 6-1 win Thursday night in front of 1,010 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah pitching allowed just one run in 27 innings in the three games against Delmarva.
The Gnats (17-8) jumped on the Shorebirds (12-14) with three runs on one swing in the bottom of the first inning. SS Gavin Cecchini walked and then RF Victor Cruzado reached on an error for L.J. Mazzilli who pounded a homerun of the year over the leftfield fence, his second of the season.
Savannah added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded, LF Stefan Sabol drove home a run with a walk and then DH Matt Oberste added a run with a single through the left side.
On the hill, Rob Whalen improved to 4-0 as he held the Shorebirds to one run in his six-plus innings. He struck out seven and walked two to lower his ERA to 1.80.
The Gnats will begin a four-game set against the Rome Braves Friday night at 7:05 pm when they send RHP Miller Diaz (1-0, 3.21) to the hill.
