St. Lucie 5 - Charlotte 0
The St. Lucie Mets jumped out to another early lead and cruised to a 5-0 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Sunday afternoon at Charlotte Sports Park.
For the fourth consecutive game on their six-game road trip, the Mets scored two runs in the first inning. Jeff Ames walked Dilson Herrera and Brandon Nimmo to begin the game, and T.J. Rivera singled to load the bases. Jairo Perez drove in Herrera with a single and Cam Maron followed with an sac fly to plate Nimmo and make it a 2-0 lead.
That would be plenty for Mets starter Matt Koch, although he had to pitch out of a jam in the first. Koch walked two batters and allowed a single to load the base, but recovered to strike out Justin O’Conner to maintain the lead.
The Mets added their final three runs in the fourth. Eudy Pina delivered a two-run single to score Maron and Aderlin Rodriguez. Ames couldn’t escape further damage and gave up a two-out RBI single to Herrera to make it 5-0.
Stone Crabs reliever Ryan Garton proceeded to retire 10 in a row, but Koch and Seth Lugo combined to provide the Mets their second shutout in four games.
Koch earned his third win, limiting the Crabs to five hits in five scoreless innings.
Lugo scattered three hits over the final four innings to pick up his second save. The Crabs loaded the bases on Lugo in the eighth with two outs, but Lugo ended the threat by striking out O’Conner.
The Mets only collected six hits in the game. No one had a multi hit game. Nimmo walked three times. He now leads the Florida State League with 31 free passes.
The Mets snapped Charlotte’s five-game winning streak. The season series is tied 2-2. - team press release
