Valverde released....

Shortly after taking the loss in the Mets 5-3 loss to the Pirates. The Mets released 36 year old relief pitcher Jose Valverde. Monday Afternoon Valverde allowed 4 runs on 4 hits walking 1 in 1/3 of an inning allowing the Pirates to come from behind.  Valverde was 1-1 with the Mets with 2 blown saves and a 5.66 ERA....Vic Black will be returning from AAA Las Vegas to replace Valverde.

Mack -

The Valverde move should have been the day before they signed him.

I keep saying... do not play anyone in 2014 that doesn't have either a contract for 2015, or a future on this team for 2015.

Regarding Hudgens, you can't blame a guy for trying to get blood out of a rock... or is that salt out of... well, you know what I mean. Remember... Marlon Byrd was yelled at for not swinging the way Sandy Alderson wanted him to do, not Hudgens.

Hudgens didn't sign these guys.

  1. It is ridiculous to me that the manager could use a guy who could even be considered for release in a high pressure situation. if i guy is that close to being released he should be used in lopsided situations or before the game is so deep. ridiculous managing and disconnect between the front office.

  2. The Mets do what the Mets do...we've seen earlier episodes of the Vaverde Comedy Hour, just with other retreads. Mets wait until the rubber peels completely off the retread rather than being proactive. And what could be heartening to Met fans (7 shutout innings from Jake, and a few hits to boot) turns into a guy going unrewarded that the fans would love to feel even better about if the team and manager played to win and got Jake some well-deserved wins. Way to build a fan base.

    Robb -

Adam Smith said in another thread that he thought both releases were a knee-jerk reaction from Jeffy. The kid just keeps breaking his toys, although (also in Adam's post) this wasn't Jeffy's worst move. Something needs to be done, and this was the choice. Bet you Terry's next.
