Binghamton 2 - Reading 0

Brandon Nimmo hit his first career Double-A home run and four Binghamton Mets pitchers combined to blank the Reading Fightin Phils in a 2-0 victory at NYSEG Stadium on Tuesday night. Nimmo’s drive, one of only two hits in the game for Binghamton, proved to be the difference on a night Reading stranded a dozen runners on base.

New York Mets outfield Juan Lagares made his second straight rehab start with Binghamton. He played the full nine innings in center field and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Lagares is recovering from a right intercostal strain that he suffered on June 1 against Philadelphia.
Neither team could put a run across the plate in the early going. Reading loaded the bases in the first against Greg Peavey, but failed to score. On the other side, Severino Gonzalez sent the first 13 Binghamton batters down in order.

The B-Mets finally broke through in the fifth. Dustin Lawley worked a one-out walk. Nimmo answered by hitting a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left field to put Binghamton on top 2-0. It was the lefty’s first career Double-A home run.

Binghamton pitching finished the job from there. Peavey (6-1) tossed six innings of shutout ball and struck out five. The righty stranded seven runners and held the Fightins hitless in six at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Randy Fontanez worked around a pair of singles in a scoreless seventh and teamed up with Adam Kolarek to complete a blank eighth. Cody Satterwhite worked around a hit batter to nail down his fourth save of the season.

Gonzalez (4-9) took the hard-luck loss after he allowed two runs on one hit and struck out seven. He retired 18 of the 21 batters he faced.
