The Binghamton Mets overcame a pair of deficits and held off the Bowie Baysox in a 7-6 win on Saturdaynight at Prince George’s Stadium. In a game that saw three lead changes, the B-Mets outlasted the Baysox to earn their fifth straight win and eleventh in the last twelve games.
The Baysox grabbed the lead in the first against B-Mets starter Steven Matz. Ronald Bermudez greeted the lefty in his Double-A debut by zipping a leadoff single to the right-field gap. He took second on a walk and scampered home on Christian Walker’s single to left, narrowly avoiding Kevin Plawecki’s tag at the plate.
Binghamton responded with a blast in the second. Following a leadoff infield single by Darrell Cecliani, Travis Taijeron crushed a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his sixth homer of the season. The drive gave Binghamton their first lead of the game.
Bowie returned serve two innings later in the fourth. Walker started the inning by bouncing a double off the left-field wall. The league-leader in RBI took third on a groundout and came home when Chris Marrero lifted a sac fly to left field, highlighted by a diving catch in the gap by Nimmo.
The B-Mets clawed back to take the lead in the fifth. Dilson Herrera ripped a double to the left-field gap, his sixth hit in three games, to start the inning. The speedy second baseman took third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to center from TJ Rivera.
The see-saw pattern continued as Bowie tied the game in the bottom of the inning. David Adams and Garabez Rosa opened the frame against Matz with singles. Bermudez knotted the game at three with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.
Bowie grabbed the lead in a flash in the sixth. Following a walk, Walker launched an 0-2 pitch from Matz over the left-field fence. His two-run shot gave Bowie a 5-3 lead. Matz collected two more strikeouts before being lifted with two outs in the inning.
Binghamton fought back in the seventh against reliever Anthony Vasquez. With a runner on first, Plawecki deposited an RBI double into the right-field corner, cutting Bowie’s lead to one. Jayce Boyd followed by plating Plawecki with the tying run on a double to the right-field alley. Three batters later, Boyd scampered home with the go-ahead run when reliever Steven Hensley uncorked a wild pitch.
The B-Mets tacked on a much-needed insurance run in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Kyle Johnson reached safely with a two-out double when his innocent popup behind second fell to the outfield turf safely. Plawecki brought him home by threading a single into left field.
Bowie had one last gasp offensively in the eighth. Reimold laced a double to right-center off Adam Kolarek and his pinch-runner Johnny Ruettiger scored on consecutive groundouts to trim Binghamton’s lead to one.
Cody Satterwhite took the reins in the ninth and posted a perfect inning, fanning Garabez Rosa to lock down his third save of the season.
Ryan Fraser (1-0) retired all four Baysox he faced after replacing Matz in the sixth to pick up his first win of the season. Vasquez (1-5) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits in the loss. Matz allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks over 5-2/3 innings in the no-decision.
POSTGAME NOTES: Dustin Lawley went 2-for-5 in his sixth-straight multiple-hit game...Dilson Herrera collected two hits and is 7-for-12 in his first three games as a B-Met…it was Binghamton’s tightest win since they beat the New Britain Rock Cats, 3-2, on May 23
