LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets scored three runs in the fourth and four in the seventh to beat the Altoona Curve, 8-2, on Friday at Peoples Natural Gas Field.Kyle Johnson went 3-for-5 and finished a home run shy of the cycle. Tyler Pill went 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored twice. Dilson Herrera tallied his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Curve starter Adrian Sampson gave up seven runs on eleven hits in 6.1 innings. The B-Mets have won 14 of their last 17 games.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Steven Matz makes his second career Double-A start on Saturday. The southpaw didn’t factor in the decision in his first outing on Saturday, 6/21 at Bowie. He went 5.2 innings, allowed five runs and struck out four in a 7-6 Binghamton win. Matz started the season in St. Lucie (High-A). The Florida State League All-Star went 4-4 with a 2.21 ERA and struck out 62 batters in 69.1 innings in the first half of 2014. The Stony Brook, New York native was taken by the Mets in the second round of the 2009 draft.
ALTOONA STARTER: LHP Zack Dodson makes his 13th appearance of the season and his 12th start. The 23-year-old is 0-1 in two games against the B-Mets this season. He’s allowed eight runs (five earned) in 7.1 innings in those matchups. Dodson is coming off a win in his last outing. The lefty held New Britain to two runs in six innings in a 4-3 Altoona win on Monday, June 23. After keeping his ERA under three in each of the first two months of the season, Dodson is allowing more than five runs per contest in five June starts. He was taken by Pittsburgh in the fourth round of the 2009 draft.
THIS ISN’T SO HARD: B-Mets starter Tyler Pill had his second straight solid night at the plate on Friday. He went 2-for-3 and scored twice. This comes after the pitcher went 3-fo-3 in his last start and finished a triple shy of the cycle. He’s hitting .600 (6-for-10) in 2014 with a home run, five runs scored and four RBI.
I NEED YOU TO COME IN ON SATURDAY: The B-Mets are 10-6 on Saturday’s this season. That’s more wins than any other day of the week. Three of those victories have come in the last two weeks. Combined with their Sunday record, the team is 17-10 on weekends.
HE IS THE DANGER: Binghamton OF Kyle Johnson continued his hot hitting against Altoona on Friday. The righty went 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI. He also finished just a home run shy of the cycle. In six games against Altoona this season, Johnson is hitting .474 (9-for-19) with two doubles, a triple, five runs and six RBI.
BETTER GET ’EM EARLY For the fourth time in the last five games, the B-Mets bullpen didn’t allow a run on Friday. Jon Velasquez and Hamilton Bennettallowed just one hit in 2.1 innings. In the last 15 frames, the Binghamton bullpen has allowed a total of four runs and struck out nineteen batters. The unit has a 3.26 ERA on the season.
PLAYING TO STRENGTHS: Binghamton pitchers struck out ten Altoona batters on Friday to improve their league lead to 615. On the other side, the Curve have more K’s than any other team in the league. The B-Mets have struck out 15 batters in the first two games of the series.
THE KID’S GOT GAME: B-Mets INF Dilson Herrera tallied his fourth multi-hit game since joining Binghamton on June 19. He’s .323 (10-for-31) in eight games with the team with three doubles, six runs scored and four RBI.
