June 18th 2014 -- Mets 3, Cardinals 2
Wednesday afternoon Bartolo Colon continued to dominate on the mound. The Mets take the final game of their three game set with the Cardinals winning 3-2. Colon’s only real trouble was leadoff batter Matt Carpenter who led off the game with a solo homer, his 3rd on the year. After that it was all Colon. In the top of the 6th Colon started a 2 run rally with his first hit as a Met, a roped double down the left field line. Colon lumbered home on a double by Eric Young Jr. to tie the game at 1. Young scored on David Wright’s RBI single and it was 2-1. In the 7th Young hit another double that scored Wilmer Flores for a 3-1 lead. Offensively Young and Taylor Teagarden both had 2 hits apiece. Colon went 8 innings allowed just 4 hits 1 run (earned) he walked 1 and struck out 1. At one point he retired 13 straight. With the win Colon improves to 7-5 on the year. Jenrry Mejia started the 9th and had 1st and 2nd with no out and got Matt Holliday to hit into a double play, but Allen Craig's infield hit scored the Card's 2nd run and Terry Collins brought in Dana Eveland to retire Matt Adams. He got him to ground to short to end the game. Eveland gets his 1st save. Lance Lynn who gave up 2 runs over 6 innings takes the loss, he falls to 7-5.With the win the Mets improve to 32-40 and are now 16-20 on the road. Thursday night the Mets start a 4 game weekend series in Miami against the Marlins. Thursday Zach Wheeler (2-7 4.38) goes for the Mets, Lefty Andrew Heaney (0-0 0.00) makes his ML debut for the Marlins.
Great. At least they escaped St. Louis with a W, avoiding a sweep. EYJr's strong game will ensure TC's inserting him at the top of order for the next several games while Flores, despite a run scoring 1-4 appearance, will ride the pine again. Colon is undoubtedly the first half MVP for the Mets. For that high honor here's to him being traded at the deadline.
