The Daytona Cubs completed a four-game sweep of the St. Lucie Mets by taking both games of a doubleheader on Sunday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The Cubs edged the Mets 4-3 in game 1 and came from behind to win 6-5 in game 2.
The Mets finish their season-high 10-game road trip with a 1-9 record. They are on a season-long eight-game losing streak.
In game 1, Daytona jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against the rehabbing Jeremy Hefner, who pitched in New York last year until undergoing Tommy John surgery on August 28.
Despite falling behind early, the Mets rallied to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth. Aderlin Rodriguez, Gilbert Gomez and Eudy Pina all doubled to make it 3-2. Wilfredo Tovar, added to the team from the Binghamton disable list, singled home Pina to tie it.
The Mets had entered the fifth inning without a hit against Cubs starter Jose Rosario.
However, the game would not be tied for long. Jake Kuebler walked Marco Hernandez to start the bottom of the fifth. Hernandez advanced to second on a passed ball by Cam Maron and went to third on a wild pitch by Kuebler. He scored on a sac fly to make it 4-3.
The Cubs had three hits in the first inning but did not come up with a hit the rest of the game.
Kuebler took the loss. The only base runner who reached in three innings against him was Hernandez.
Hefner gave up three hits and three runs in three innings. He walked four and struck out four.
Michael Jensen pitched a scoreless inning to get the win and Zack Godley induced double play balls to end the sixth and seventh to get the save.
In game 2, the Cubs and Mets went back and forth until Dan Vogelbach gave the Cubs the lead for good when his two-run homer against T.J. Chism in the fifth made it 6-5.
The Mets took an early 2-0 lead in the first on Rodriguez’s two-run single.
The Cubs scored three runs with two outs in the fourth. Wes Darvill’s two-run single put the Cubs up 3-2. Gioskar Amaya followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2.
The Mets would fight back with three runs of their own in the fifth to retake the lead. L.J. Mazzilli and Jared King hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie it 4-4. Mazzilli scored on Starling Peralta’s wild pitch to give the Mets a 5-4 advantage.
Again, the lead was short-lived. Vogelbach’s homer in the bottom of the inning proved to be the difference.
King flied out to end the game will Tovar on third base as the tying run.
Chism took the loss.
Peralta got the win. He allowed two inherited runners to score but did not give up a run of his own in 2 1/3 innings. - team press release
