Ernest Dove - WWED ---- What Would Ernest Do (with the Mets)

So I've decided to promote myself to position of GM for the Mets. Ok, sure, I don't actually currently work for the organization. I have no experience as a GM, and I technically don't have any experience working in baseball, but that hasn't stopped any of us Monday-morning-QBs anyway, so here it goes.

First order of business:  Trade Bartolo Colon.

Raise your hand if you really truly were optimistic on this 40+ year old, $20+ million dollar man..... Go ahead, I'll wait.....
Anyway, Mr. Colon has smelled pretty good in a Mets uniform this year.  Realistically, I don't any of us expected him to have another sub 3.00 ERA or anything, but I don't think anyone realized that he would continue to do exactly what my (yes, my) organization hoped he would do, which is to pitch in to the 7th/8th inning ever 5 days, and more often than not give us a chance to win.
Of course, with that being said, I need him 'outta here' !!!! (Gary Cohen voice)........ I don't see Colon pitching in October, during a pennant race, for the New York Mets.  But I do see a couple of organizations betting on exactly that.  And so, I'm trading Colon to whoever will give me a prospect, I'm assuming AA ball or lower, in their top 20.

Secondly, I'm cutting the fat (notice how I did that AFTER talking about Colon, and its not about Colon).

I'm trading/releasing some or all of the following:

Chris Young---I'm assuming nobody wants him, so the old DFA/release is utilized here.

Eric Young Jr--- hopefully assuming my organizations love for this guy has dimmed a bit
following the recent emergency of Grandy as a viable short term leadoff guy, I'm
trying to trade this 'sparkplug' to whoever needs a speed demon, 4th/5th OF type
guy, and maybe get some low A prospect or some other under 30 yr old looking for                           a chance for redemption.

Dice K----------has anyone noticed his Amazin season/comeback he has put together? Despite going
From starter, to reliever, to one time closer, to reliever, to starter, to reliever, he has
Still somehow managed to have his best ERA since 2008.  I'm trading him to
Somebody, who could better decide what to do with him, and get another low A
                         Potential kid.

Hefner/Torres-- As is the case with most of Mets overabundance is with their pitching.  And, I this
Case, we can't have everyone be the long relief man at the same time. I should find
Somebody willing to add Torres to their playoff pushing bullpen, or take the risk on
Hefner and give us some random PTBNL.

Abreu------------ Well, he gave it a good run for a couple of months.  He's still a guy who can make
Contact, and give you some walks and a randomly timely run scoring hit, but I
Don't think I can find a taker who will give me anything more then minor league
Roster filler, so back to that old DFA here.

Good old Murphy---- again, I'm bursting everyone bubble here, but my current ownership is not
Giving me $9-10 mil for em unless it means that Colon is gone, and CY contract
Money is NOT used on anyone else other then giving raises to players like Murphy
And Duda. I'm packaging Murphy and a prospect or two to try and find a OF or                                SS.

Kevin Plaweckij--strike while the iron is hot.....TDA, health willing, might spend the next 5-7 years putting up all star numbers from the catching position.  And since I'm counting on Duds, and thus not thinking outside the box and making Plawecki/TDA a first baseman, I'm packaging Plawecki (most likely with Murphy) In a deal for a starting SS or OF.

(I'm not even getting into the Flores thing.....I'm too upset for this guy...... hopefully he stays)

Who I'm making untouchable:

Noah Syndergaard-

Say what you want about all the past 'never was'/ 'Generation K' guys who never made it.  I'm still putting some faith In a still 21 year old 97-98mph flamethrower who is still improving in his confidence with breaking stuff.

Zack Wheeler---

We can argue all day about trade value, lack of consistent control, and 100 pitches thrown by the 6th inning.  Unlike a player such as Jenrry Mejia, Wheeler is still throwing a 'quality start' in these 6 innings, and he is now reportedly consistently hitting 95mph in the 5th-6th inning now, so I'll take my chances that he remains 'legit' and is starting in the 2015-2018 playoffs along side Harvey.

Nimmo/Conforto---

Yes, Nimmo is currently hitting under .200 as of Thursday afternoon since jumping to the all important AA ball level.  But, you know what, we all know the story here.  Kid didn't even play for an actual high school, and his swing is still sweet, soooooooooo, go ask Dominic Smith about his 20-30 game start in Savannah, and check out what he's done since.

As for Conforto, I'm not trading him (I think he can't technically be traded until July 2015) because he's a first round college pick who was assumable drafted to be paired with great pitching, and a veteran 2016 outfield, to bat lower in the order in their hopeful playoff push.

In quick note: I'm NOT trading Dilson Herrera, Steven Matz, or  Dom Smith... no further explanation.

Last, but not least, I'm praying for good pitching health---

Right now, I'm not focusing on praying for hitters like TDA and Lagares to stay healthy.  I'm saving my prayers for the guys who can hopefully, and consistently, keep the opposing team under 3 runs most nights, and give this future offense a chance to at least muster 3-4 runs to win 60%+ of our games.

I'm praying for Harvey's elbow...... and Familia's elbow.........and Mejia's elbow........and Parnell's elbow.....(wow, crazy time in baseball with elbows around the league).

Oh, and did I mention I'm switching managers.................................... good night everybody!.

  1. I like and agree with most of your points Ernest.

My thoughts, point by point, are as follows.

    1. Colon – agree that he should be traded for the best prospect possible
    2. Both Youngs – Agree to Release/trade
    3. Dice K – agree, trade for the best
    4. Hefner/Torres, Strongly disagree that we should get rid of either. They’re both such versatile pitchers and both of them can come out of the pen and slot into the rotation so effectively for a time that they’re my rotational depth for next year allowing a few of the SP prospects or MLB to be packaged in trades
    5. Abreu – DFA or give away
    6. Murph – This is complicated. I could trade or keep him. If you can find the right team that needs a 2B and a Colon you might be able to get something special back. I’d listen to all offers for him but it has to be a serious return to trade him solo, something approaching the Dickey deal. If you don’t get what you want you can sign him for next year and trade him at the deadline when Herrera should be ready to come up.

As for the rest my no trade list is a little different.

    No Trade
    Harvey
    Wheeler
    deGrom
    TDA
    Wright
    Herrera
    Matz
    Smith
    Niese
    Lagares
    In no particular order.

That leaves you with a combination of
    Montero
    Thor
    Pawlecki
    Gee
    Nimmo
And whatever prospects we get back from our trades as serious trade bait for an impact bat.

  2. I don't get the Hefner/Torres commment. Torres has been effective and I would like him back next year. Hefner is worth keeping around. You can never have too much pitching. Now if someone offers a good return, yes make the trade. If your near the end of spring training in 2015 and you can't find a spot for them then yes, make the trade.
But why in the world trade an effective relief pitcher for a "random PTBNL". Why would you trade a pitcher who was very effective before Tommy John surgery, who is low pay, and under control for a "random PTBNL"

I would like Dice K back but he likely will leave after the season so yes take the best offer.

Abreu is cheap. I think he would be good to have around in Sept. when the young guy come up. I wouldn't DFA him. If we get an offer deal him, if not let him finish the season.

Chris Young- Your not going to save any money by cutting him. If he is blocking a better player then DFA him.

    E. Young keep as a 4th or 5th outfielder, emergency infielder unless you get an offer.

Colon- not high priced for someone who give you a quality start every time out. If no one give a good offer bring him back and go with a 6 man rotation to save the young arms. You will see all teams going to a 6 man rotation within 3 years. Might has well do it now.

    Murphy is not going anywhere.

  3. Guys, I love Hefner and Torres, but teams don't carry 9-10 man bullpens....
I also love harvey, wheeler, Niese, Gee, deGrom, Thor and Montero, but the team is not going with a 7 man rotation.
We can argue who stays/goes for days........which is good, because thats entertaining for us to have friendly debates about our favorite team.

  4. You can't deal either Torres or Hefner until Hefner proves he is 100 back - so this is likely an off season move

But - Hefner is off the 40 man and is still under our control for next season, so the best bet is to keep Torres and have Hefner in AAA in the rotation as insurance next spring - it suck for Hef, but that is the best business decision

  5. Ernest

Look at the Braves and you can see how easy it is to loose three starters in a matter of weeks. Hefner could easily spend the rest of the year in the minors. We don't need to force the issue with him. Now if a team does offer something of value I can see your point. When you state it as a random PTBNL that is a dump.
I don't see the need for that at this point. Yes the Mets are deep in pitching but their not deep enough to just start discarding quality pitchers.
Don't turn down a good offer for Hefener or Torres but don't dump them either.
In the case of Chris Young he is taking a roster spot of someone like Nieuwenhuis so I can see the argument for dumping him. Who would you replace Torres with? No one that is going to do any better than he is.
If you were saying shop Hefner and Torres I would agree but you are saying dump for no value in return or at least that is the logical conclusion of trading for a random PTBNL.

  6. If a healthy Harvey, wheeler, Matz, Thor , mejia, black and familia are good to go in 2015, then I'm happy......everything else is a crap shoot of working and not working in regards to trades and choosing one over the other on the 25man

  7. Ernest, you need to pray harder. Dice K back to NY due to sore arm. One down..

I like Barnaby's points and agree Torres and Hefner have real worth. I'll bet Hefner would have pitched better in 2013 if he felt better, and in many games, he wasn't bad anyway

  8. Re: Dice-K
It was an accident in the dugout involving his elbow

  9. A little off topic but I'm going to be near Binghamton Monday. I'm driving from N.Y. to Chicago. It would be a little out of my way but if Matz were to be pitching it would be a no brainer. Does anyone know who is scheduled to pitch?
