Monday night in Seattle, Jon Niese had a rocky return from
the DL as the Mariners beat the Mets 5-2. The Mets have now dropped 3
straight. Niese showed the rust of not
pitching for 17 days giving up 4 runs in 4 innings, while the Met offense
sputtered against rookie lefty Roenis Elias. Mike Zunino hit his 14th
home and Kyle Seager drove in a pair of
runs, Willie Bloomquist added an RBI double as Niese allowed 11 hits in 6 innings allowing all 4 runs (earned) while
walking 2 and striking out 5. Niese takes the loss falling to 5-5 and his
consecutive game streak of allowing 3 runs or less ends. David Wright had 2 hits on the night. His RBI
single in the 3rd actually tied the game at 1. In the 9th
trailing 5-1, Daniel Murphy reached on an error allowing Juan Lagares to score
the Mets 2nd run. Elias gets
the win, he struck out 8 in 5 1/3 before leaving with cramps in his
forearm. Travis d’Arnaud continues to
stay hot as he went 2 for 4 as well. The Mets
now fall to 1-3 on this road trip. Overall they stand at 46-53 and 21-30
on the road. Tuesday night Jacob deGrom
(3-5 3.18) looks to stop the bleeding for the Mets.
Erasmo Ramirez (1-4 4.58) goes
for Seattle.
This team is improved, in my opinion. What it needed to get in the race was 1) avoid offensive droughts and 2) get lucky, such as having an unusually strong run of one run victories. The last 3 days really made it clear that having everything line up like that is unlikely.
