But there remains one serious concern, though it is no fault of his: D’Arnaud is just 25 years old, and has suffered four known concussions. This is an issue that he takes seriously, and that has led some on the staff to wonder if a shift to left field might preserve the best parts of d’Arnaud, without risking his brain.
“We’ve talked about it,” Terry Collins told the Daily News. “We’ve brought it up. Obviously, with what he’s started to do offensively, we’ve got to see if these concussions are leading to anything. Is he changing his position (defensively), where he is positioning himself behind the hitter, to get less foul tips?”

Right now, it's somewhere between rumor and bullshit, but it does make a lot of sense if Travis could work at this transition over two off-seasons.
Two off seasons?
ReplyDeleteI think he would only have one for it to make sense. They need a left fielder now. Plawecki is ready now or close to it.
Nimmo or Conforto shouldn't be to far away for the start of 2016.
I do think Travis does have the make up to be a decent left fielder.
I think it is a better option than trading Syndergaard or deGrom to get the same result offensively.
Worth a try on d'Arnaud in LF. Forgot about his concussions. Of course, former LF Bay had a few of his own out there.
ReplyDeleteWell, hopefully the one Arizona Fall League assignment that is TBD is his, playing in the outfield
ReplyDeleteIf TDA can transition to LF, does anyone think he can move to RF? The Mets are going to have an interesting problem Conforto, Nimmo, d'Arnaud, Lagares, Duda, and Plawecki and how to fit all of them - they can't.
ReplyDeletePersonally I'd love to see Travis make the switch to a position other than catcher and succeed. The kid was AA MVP when he was 21 and playing limited games because of his position.
Moving him off catcher increases his playing time in two ways. First, most catchers play a limited number of games to begin with, so their offensive production is limited. In TDA's case, if playing catcher increases his injuries, he's limited even further.
Based on his talent and minor league production, he could be a .300+, .900+ OPS player with 30 HR and 100 RBI when he hits his prime and gets full seasons of playing time.

ReplyDeleteYou know I was never a fan of picking Conforto because, simply put, he can't play outfield.
I never understand the logic the Mets use when they draft a damaged player
Yea, it's looking more like he's going to have to DH or play 1B...meaning a likely trade.
DeleteSo stupid when Brad Zimmer was staring you right in your face.
