LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets got an RBI single from T.J. Rivera in the bottom of the eighth inning to top the Bowie Baysox, 2-1, on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. Rivera went 4-fo-4 in the win and extended his hitting streak to ten games. Rainy Lara tossed seven innings of one-run ball and struck out seven. He didn’t factor into the decision. Jack Leathersich threw a scoreless inning and picked up the win for the second straight night. Cody Satterwhite shut the door in the ninth for his 11th save. The B-Mets go for the series sweep on Sunday. They are just three games back of Portland for first in the Eastern Division.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Steven Matz makes his eighth start of the season and his second against Bowie. The south paw is coming off a loss in his last outing. He gave up five runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings in a 5-1 Binghamton loss to New Hampshire to open this home stand on Monday, July 28. Matz made his Double-A debut in his only other matchup against the Baysox this season. He gave up five runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings and didn’t factor into the decision on June 21. The B-Mets came out on top in the game, 7-6. The Stony Brook, New York native was taken by the Mets in the second round of the 2009 draft out of Ward Melville Senior High School in East Setauket, New York.
BOWIE STARTER: RHP Zach Davies toes the rubber for the 16th time this season and his15th start. The Chandler, Arizona native is coming off a win in back-to-back outings. That includes surrendering just one run in six innings and striking out five in a 5-1 Bowie victory over Akron on Tuesday, July 29. Davies earned the win in his only other matchup with Binghamton. He allowed just one hit in seven shutout innings as the Baysox won 2-0. It’s the only win Bowie has against Binghamton this season. The 21-year-old was drafted by Baltimore in the 26th round of the 2011 draft out of Mesquite High School in Gilbert, Arizona.
CLIMBING THE LADDER: Three straight wins by Binghamton coupled with three straight losses by Portland has the Sea Dogs lead for first place trimmed to just three games. That’s as close as the B-Mets have been since May 19. At 21 games about .500, the team has tied it’s high-water mark for the year. Portland and Binghamton don’t matchup again for the rest of the regular season.
RIVERA ROCKS THE SOX: Binghamton INF T.J. Rivera went 4-for-4 and drove in the eventual game-winning run in the eighth on Saturday to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He’s hitting .450 (18-40) during that stretch. The four hit night was his third since coming to Binghamton on June 19.
POWER OUTAGE: After these two squads combined for 30 runs and 51 hits through the first two games of this series, they were held to a combined three scores on Saturday. Each team had four home runs over the first two nights, but neither went deep on Saturday.
THE COMEBACKS CONTINUE: For the fourth time on this home stand, Binghamton came from behind to win a gameon Saturday. That includes three comebacks in the eighth inning or later. The walk-off win on Friday came after team trailed by five heading to the bottom of the fourth.
BOUNCING BOWIE: The B-Mets can go for the series sweep of the Baysox on Sunday. The team is 5-1 against Bowie in 2014. They took two-of-three on the road in June. Binghamton has outscored Bowie 20-13 through the first two games of this series. Overall, they are 33-17 against the Western Division this season.
We need less talk about TJ surgery and more about TJ Rivera, the Jeff Keppinger of their system. Dude loves being well above .300
