August 21st
Earlier in the day Chicago lost 3-1 to the Braves at Wrigley
so a Met win would move them just 6 back- closer than they’d been since July 30th.
Tom Seaver started but was uncharacteristically wild-issuing seven free passes
and giving up 6 runs, 4 earned in his 7 innings of work.
Down to their last out in the 9th the home team
rallied with back-to-back singles off Giant reliever Frank Linzy, putting
runners on 1st and 2nd for RF Ron Swoboda. He came
through with an RBI single, scoring Cleon Jones from 2nd, knotting
it up at 6 all.
It remained that way
until Ken Henderson ripped a three-bagger past Agee in center in the 11th,
driving in pitcher Don McMahon to make it 7-6 San Fran. McMahon retired the
Mets in order in the bottom half of the inning to secure a Giants win, keeping
New York 7 games out in the NL East. Next up: the Dodgers in town for a weekend series.
