August 21^st

Earlier in the day Chicago lost 3-1 to the Braves at Wrigley so a Met win would move them just 6 back- closer than they’d been since July 30^th. Tom Seaver started but was uncharacteristically wild-issuing seven free passes and giving up 6 runs, 4 earned in his 7 innings of work.  

Down to their last out in the 9^th the home team rallied with back-to-back singles off Giant reliever Frank Linzy, putting runners on 1^st and 2^nd for RF Ron Swoboda. He came through with an RBI single, scoring Cleon Jones from 2^nd, knotting it up at 6 all.   

It remained that way until Ken Henderson ripped a three-bagger past Agee in center in the 11^th, driving in pitcher Don McMahon to make it 7-6 San Fran. McMahon retired the Mets in order in the bottom half of the inning to secure a Giants win, keeping New York 7 games out in the NL East. Next up: the Dodgers in town for a weekend series.
