Another
of Sandy Alderson’s high ceiling high school
pitchers is off to a good professional start. 18-year old Kurtis Horne, the 6-5 lefty out of Sooke,
British Columbia, Canada, has now pitched in six GCL Mets games, giving up only
one earned run in 7.0-IP (1.29, 1.14). Horne actually just turned 18 two weeks
ago, so he wil pitch most of next season at 18 also. Another ‘no rush, high
ceiling’ late round pick (31st), my guess is you’ll see him in
Kingsport next season. So far, so good.
We
talk all the time about the ‘can’t miss’ starters that came through Brooklyn,
six of which started for the All-Star team in the season they played for the
Cyclones. They, and their fate are/were:
2014 – Marcos Molina –
2013
– Miller Diaz – good record this year in
Savannah (13-G, 11-ST, 6-1, 2.25), but injuries have slowed down his progress
2012
– Luis Mateo – the 24-year old has spent
most of the year on the disabled list. Still working out on the back mounds in
Port St. Lucie.
2010
– Yohan Almonte – pitched fairly well for
Savannah in 2011, but then pitched poorly in 2012 and is now out of baseball…
at 22 years old
2009
– Mark Cohoon – went 7-1, 1.30 for Savannah
in 2010 and was bumped straight to Binghamton at all-start break. Career went
downhill from then and he left baseball after the 2013 season… at 25-years old.
2005
– Bobby Parnell – converted to, first a
reliever in 2009, and then the Mets closer in 2013.
The expected
Amed Rosario promotion from Brooklyn to Savannah
falls in line with the normal procedures; however, heads were turned and
questions were raised why Alfredo Reyes (GCL:
.236) was promoted from the GCL Mets to Brooklyn over Luis
Guillorme (K-Port - .281) and Milton Ramos (GCL
.243). The Mets signed Reyes in 2010 with a $200K bonus. A scout report at the
time: “The New York Mets signed Reyes after watching him develop into an
athletic shortstop who can make the difficult plays on defense look routine. Reyes showed gap power and an ability to
control the strike zone at the plate.
His wiry-athletic frame allows him to project well at the SS position.”
The 20-year old Reyes hit .316 last season in 212 at-bats for the DSL Mets.
Thomas
Brennan pointed out
earlier this month the depth of middle infield talent in the organization and
one would expect a pretty decent shortstop to be developed here. My guess is
that Dilson Herrera has first dibs at replacing Daniel Murphy on second base, beginning in 2016, but
it will first be interesting to see if he takes on a summer stint playing
shortstop.
Rotographs
on Mets bullpen –
Jenrry
Mejia‘s woes continued in today’s game
against the Cubs. Mejia entered in the ninth inning with the Mets down 2-1 and
allowed two runs off of a Javier Baez homer.
Mejia has dealt with a calf issue previously and will need surgery on a hernia
in the offseason and it’s clearly affected his performance of late. As of this
writing, Terry Collins hasn’t said anything
about Mejia’s role moving forward but Jeurys Familia should
be owned in all league’s, check your wire immediately. It’s also worth noting that with knowledge of
all these ailments, Collins had Mejia pitch the fourth time in five games,
probably not the smartest decision by his manager. A few weeks ago I felt safe
assuming Mejia as the Mets closer on opening day 2015 but there is a real
chance Familia takes the role this year, muddling Mejia’s chances next year
along with Bobby Parnell who should be back from
TJ surgery. Also of note, Vic Black recorded two
outs in today’s game, lowering his ERA to 2.01. Although he profiles as a
potential closer, he’s still behind Familia in the pecking order but that may
be the best for his future health on the Mets.
Mack
– The season is over and there is no reason to be pitching Jenrry Mejia at this point. Put him on the
DL and let him have him surgery early so there is more time for healing.
He
can easily be replaced for the remainder of the year (as closer) by Familia and Gonzales Germen can take over Jeurys' past slot in the rotation (joining Black as the 7-8-9 guys).
And,
by the way, don’t make the assumption that the Mets are going to offer
arbitration-3 money (est. $4.5mil) to a pitcher that may not be ready until
mid-season (Bobby
Parnell).
I
am sure none of the Mets are 100% into these games anymore. I’m thrilled with
what the pen did this year and I look for it to only get better next year with
possible additions like Zack
Thornton,
Jack Leathersich, and Logan Verrett.

Wouldn't Wilmer Flores and Matt Reynolds be in the mix for 2015 if they deem Herrera isn't ready to face ML competition yet?
ReplyDeleteWhy don't they promote Herrera to help Las Vegas with its final stretch and see that he can handle a few weeks of AAA and the open up the real possibility he can start in the majors next year instead of 2016?
@Reese
ReplyDeleteThere probably isn't much activity on the promotional front because every minor league affliate (outside of Port St. Lucie) is in contention for a playoff spot. Promoting/Demoting anyone risk screwing with the current make-up of any of these really good minor league teams.
Probably safe to assume that the Nats, Angels, Orioles, Marlins, Rays and A's, among other organizations, were not as concerned about minor league team standings when they were calling up the current/future stars of this league, based on their actual performance and ability. ....just sayin
ReplyDeleteMinor league performance means a bit more for the Mets right now because they have to demonstrate that they care for the owners because they are trying to get out of Vegas and want to show potential landing spots that they don't abandon the affiliates when the ML team is going nowhere, so playoffs are actually important. Poor performance is one of the reasons they got bumped out of Buffalo
Deleteto the MLB level sure....
ReplyDeletebut between minor league affliates....i doubt it
Reese -
ReplyDeleteActually, I would love to see BOTH Herrera and Reynolds in Queens in September.
Flores has had ample time to be showcased.
Let's see these boys play.
Chris is right though
ReplyDeleteSo u guys are telling me that if the Mete had originally had players like Harper, machado, trout and stanton in their organization, they wouldn't have left them in certain lower levels to 'get them playoff experience'?
ReplyDeleteIf Mets had drafted Harper, trout or machado, they would all probably still be in the minors in 2014..........but what do I know. I'm probably just rambling on out of frustration from another crappt year.
@Mack
ReplyDeleteHe is Rule 5 eligible this off-season so the team needs to add him to the 40 man roster but I don't think that will happen till closer to draft time.
At this point in time we will only see the following guys.
Erik Goeddel
Scott Rice
Juan Centeno
Taylor Teagarden
Josh Satin
Wilfredo Tovar
Andrew Brown
Cesar Puello
We are unlikely to see Steven Matz even though he's on the 40 man roster because he's already brushing up on his innings limit.
The team currently has 1 40 man spot open but I assume it will be used on Syndergaard who I also think they will bring up.

ReplyDeletedetails, details... :)

ReplyDeleteIMO, you are correct. There are very few players that moved to the majors on a fast track.
That's just how the Mets roll.
It's not an issue if you have MLB-ready talent ready to be promoted year-to-year, which the Mets have not.
Next year looks like Plawecki, Syndergaard, Reynolds, and Montero get their turn. Also, probably Verrett in the pen
@Ernest
ReplyDeleteIf they were there as of 8/1/2014....absolutely.
ON AVERAGE....Promotions around the league are done in the late June/early July range....
Anything after that are promotions only to cover injuries or because the prospect is a stud on a bad minor league team and could assist the next level up in a playoff run.
If the Mets had a Harper/Stanton/Trout type player in Port St. Lucie right now....YES he would be called up to Binghamton to help that team.
But, if you haven't noticed....most of the top prospects, who were having good years, have already moved on from St. Lucie.
Unfortunfortunately
ReplyDeleteI doubt the Mets will ever have a Harper/Trout/Stanton type
especially if more Cecchini's are future 1st round picks.
But then again, what do I know?
I'm just tired, frustrated, & cranky after yet another season was over by the end of July.

ReplyDeleteRegarding the Mets, I invented crankiness.
I want everyone to think about Akeel Morris and if you're willing to lose him, just to see Reynolds, Plawecki, Matz, Puello, etc who are not on the 40 man roster and don't need to be added this season to be protected from the Rule V draft.
ReplyDeleteWe have an abundance of pretty good prospects that will either need to be protected by being added to the 40 man roster, or they will be exposed to everyone other team in the Rule V draft come December.
Akeel Morris is just the example player I'm using, but it could clearly be another prospect we could lose just to see a few weeks of a guy, which in my opinion is not a good baseball decision at the risk of losing some one else.
I get why we would all want to see some of these guys and "let the kids play," I agree 100% as I always want to see what they can offer, but not at the risk of what we could potentially lose come December.
Here's a pretty comprehensive list of the players that would either need to be added to the 40 man to be protected or exposed to the Rule V draft.
AAA --- Las Vegas 51s
Chasen Bradford
John Church
Darin Gorski
Jack Leathersich
Cory Mazzoni
Daniel Muno
Noah Syndergaard
Zack Thornton
Cory Vaughn
Logan Verrett
AA --- Binghamton Mets
Xorge Carrillo
Darrell Ceciliani
Randy Fontanez
Ryan Fraser
Dilson Herrera
Chase Huchingson
Adam Kolarek
Rainy Lara
Dustin Lawley
Greg Peavey
Tyler Pill
T.J. Rivera
Travis Taijeron
Jon Velasquez
Gabriel Ynoa
A+ --- St. Lucie Mets
T.J. Chism
Maikis De La Cruz
Cole Frenzel
Gilbert Gomez
Julian Hilario
Seth Lugo
Cam Maron
Luis Mateo
Domingo Tapia
Beck Wheeler
A --- Savannah Sand Gnats
Octavio Acosta
Victor Cruzado
Miller Diaz
Jeff Glenn
John Mincone
Bret Mitchell
Akeel Morri
Yeixon Ruiz
I thought Matz and Puello WERE currently on the 40 man.........
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I guess I just say make it a priority to protect Syndergaard and Herrera.......everyone else, take ur chances...........if someone wants Low A ball pitching Akeel on their major league roster next year, I think that would speak more about Mets mismanagement of developing players properly, then it does about the team risking a 25man roster spot on this kids potential.
I think Akeel has to be on the 40 man. I'll bet he pitches in the majors by 2016.
ReplyDelete@Tom and @The Closer
ReplyDeleteAkeel Morris will be protected in my opinion.
In regards to Rule 5 eligible guys....they don't have to be protected (added to 40 man roster) until late November.
By that time the mets should have 40 man spots open from Carlyle, Eveland, and Teagarden all leaving
@ Chris -- I think Tom & Closer’s point is that it makes little sense to burn a 40-man slot on someone who does NOT have to be protected in November (Reynolds, Pawlecki).
ReplyDeleteThor & Dislon are no-brainers for that protection so IF you’re adding anyone to the 40-man now, it should be them. I think they will add Thor.
The brainers—if that’s the antonym to no-brainer—require a crystal ball as to whom others might be willing to carry as a 25th man. I could see that happening to Ynoa, maybe Leather, and Akeel. As you say, there should be room to carry them by November,
Hobie, Exactly the point I was tying to make, thank you for clarifying for me.
