St. Lucie 6 - Clearwater 3
The St. Lucie Mets scored five of their runs with two outs as they came from behind to defeat the Clearwater Threshers 6-3 on Saturday at Bright House Field.
With the game tied 3-3 in the eighth, Gavin Cecchini belted an RBI double off the wall in right that scored Gilbert Gomez. Albert Cordero followed with a two-run home to left to put the Mets up 6-3. Both hits came with two outs
Beck Wheeler pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to close out the game and earn his eighth save.
Dario Alvarez, making his St. Lucie debut, inherited runners at second and third with one out in the sixth and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. However, he got Herlis Rodriguez to line into an inning-ending double play. That kept the deficit at 3-2.
The Mets wasted no time tying the game in their next trip to the plate. With Cordero on third base, Maikis De La Cruz hit a slow chopper on the infield that was booted by Harold Martinez. Cordero scored on the error to make it 3-3.
J.P. Crawford led off the bottom of the seventh with a double against Alvarez, but Alvarez struck out the side to finish his outing. He got the win.
Cecchini, who went 2 for 3 on Friday, went 2 for 3 again on Saturday. Both hits were run-scoring doubles with two outs.
Cordero went 2 for 4 and is now 9 for his last 19 in a six-game stretch.
Jared King had two hits for the third straight game.
Matt Koch got a no decision. The Mets starter went 5 1/3 and scattered six hits. He gave up three runs, two earned.
