2015 Draft Profile - SS - Brendan Rodgers - Lake Mary (FL) HS - UPDATED 9-11-14

9-11-14 – Fangraphs Top 50 Players in Draft -                 1. Brendan Rodgers, SS, Lake Mary HS (FL), Florida State commit - Hit: 60/60, Raw Power: 60/60 , Speed: 50/50+ , Field: 50/55, Throw: 55/55 - Rodgers was a standout last summer with scouts saying he’d go in the top 50 picks as a high school junior, then he took a huge step forward this summer when his bat speed and raw power jumped at least a notch, if not two.  If you want to see him really let loose at the plate, check out this video, which I’m assuming is the And1 Mixtape Home Run Derby.  Rodgers is only a solid-average runner but makes the most of his foot speed with solid instincts and very rarely ever misplays a ball at short.  Some scouts aren’t ready to anoint him the top prospect in the land yet because he doesn’t “look like that type,” which is basically code for an average running white shortstop isn’t supposed to go 1/1.  An averaging running shortstop from Orlando went 5th overall last year with 50 at best raw power and the 2015 class is shallow up top, so Rodgers belongs somewhere close to #1 if he isn’t the best player right now. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-mlb-draft-top-51/

Speaking of Brendan Rodgers, he was easily the most advanced hitter I saw at the Metropolitan Baseball Classic last week at Citi Field

Brendan Rodgers has shot to be a top 5 pick in 2015. Here's some footage from workouts and the game.

Brendan Rodgers, SS, Lake Mary HS (FL)

At the Perfect Game National Showcase, Rodgers continued to show off his total package of skills. He threw 93 mph from across the infield, which was tops in the event. He ran a 6.7/60 and impressed scouts with his power and bat speed. The 6’-0”, 185 pound right-hander is a terrific athlete and a gifted defender, which will allow him to stick at a premium position at the next level. Offensively, he has great power potential, as well as a mature approach at the plate. Over 22 games as a junior, he hit .397/.488/.823 with five doubles, eight home runs, 10 walks and 10 strikeouts. He has established himself as the best prep hitter in the 2015 MLB draft. Committed to Florida State.  http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2015-mlb-draft-armour-aa-game-preview-part-1/43804

6-11-14 – Kevin Askeland/MaxPreps – Top 10 High School Players To Watch for 2015 Draft – Brendan Rodgers, Lake Mary (Fla.), SS - Florida could be home to the top high school shortstop for the second straight year (Gordon was the top high school shortstop drafted this year), as Rodgers batted .397 with eight home runs. http://www.maxpreps.com/news/RE_IkTleBU-vFF_g8YCOQg/top-10-high-school-players-to-watch-for-2015-mlb-draft.htm

B/R - 4. Chicago Cubs Select Fla. HS SS Brendan Rodgers - If there's one player who can challenge Dazmon Cameron for the top spot on the high school position-player board next year, it's Brendan Rodgers. He's not the same kind of athlete but has the benefit of projecting as a shortstop in pro ball.  Rodgers isn't dazzling with the glove; he just makes all the plays you need from a shortstop. He's got average arm strength that plays up because of his ability to release the ball quickly and accurately thanks to excellent footwork. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2085268-mlb-mock-draft-2015-brs-official-early-predictions-for-next-years-top-10/page/2

6-10-14 - Brendan Rodgers, SS, Lake Mary High School, FL
When discussing the 2014 draft last month with a scout, Rodgers came up.  The scout’s take on Rodgers was that he would be the top pick in 2014 if he was eligible.   Rodgers squares up regularly, showing good bat speed and power.  A big bat and the ability to stick at a premium position is likely to keep him near the top of draft boards.

6-3-14  -  One of the top defensive coming out of high school in 2015 is Lake Mary (FL High School's Brendan Rodgers. Scouts project he will stay at short due to his strong arm, athleticism, and soft hands. He also has above average speed that comes to play both in the field and at bat.

Now, this doesn't mean he can't hit a ball. His stat line, through 5-20-14, was .397/.488/.823, 8-HR, 10BB/10K.

He's committed to Florida State but it's tough to imagine him not moving on to the pros.
