September 15th 2014 -- Marlins 6, Mets 5

Monday night at Citi Field, Jacob deGrom had a record tying start, but the Marlins scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th to drop the Mets 6-5. deGrom started off in amazing fashion. He tied a nearly 30 year old Major league record by striking out the first 8 batters he faced in the game tying the mark set by Jim Deshaies.  The Mets staked him to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Wilmer Flores hit a laser double in the left-centerfield gap scoring Travis d’Arnaud and Lucas Duda.  deGrom pitched 7 , in the top of the 7th the Marlins scored 3 times to take a 3-2 lead. Former Met Jordanny Valdespin hit a two run single to tie the game.  Reed Johnson’s sac-fly gave Miami the lead. The Mets came back immediately  in the bottom of the 7ths and behind an RBI single by Daniel Murphy an RBI double by d’Arnaud and Curtis Granderson’s bases loaded walk….the Mets had a 5-3 lead. In the 8th Jeurys Familia came in and uncharacteristically got knocked around.  Familia only lasted a 1/3 of an inning and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits allowing the Marlins to take a 6-5 lead. Steve Cishek pitched the 9th for this 36th save.  deGrom went 7 allowed 6 hits 3 runs (all earned) he walked 1 and struck out a career high 13.  Sam Dyson got the win for Miami improving to 3-1, Familia takes the loss falling to 2-5. Offensively  Adeiny Hechavarria  and Valdespin had 2 RBI apiece for Miami.  For the Mets Murphy, d’Arnaud and Flores had 2 hits apiece. The Mets now fall to 72-79 on the year, they are now 1 game under .500 at home at 36-37 and are 4-4 on this homestand.  Tuesday night is game two of the series, Bartolo Colon (13-12  4.14) goes for the Mets, Nathan Eovaldi (6-11  4.79) goes for the Fish.
