Sunday in Cincinnati a dropped fly ball by Billy Hamilton
opened the doors to a 2 run homer by Anthony Recker. The Mets beat the Reds 4-3.
Zach Wheeler started for the Mets and pitched terrific once again. Wheeler
pitched out of jams all day long, including a bases load no out jam in the 4th.
In the 5th, the Reds broke through with a 1-0 lead on a RBI single
by Scott Schumaker . A half inning later
Hamilton dropped a flyball to center by Wilmer Flores putting him at 2nd with
only 1 out, after RBI single by Curtis
Granderson tied the game at 1, Recker clubbed a long two run homer, his 6th
on the year to make it 3-1. In the 8th, an error cost the Reds again
as Jack Hannahan dropped a foul pop up by Granderson. Given the second chance
Granderson then made it 4-1 with a solo homer in the continued at
bat. For Grandy his 18th on the year and 2nd home run in
the series. Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 2 for 5, Juan Lagares went 1 for 3 with 2
walks and 3 stolen bases. Wheeler went 6 innings allowing 5 hits 1 run (earned)
he walked 2 and struck out 6. Wheeler earns his 10th win improving
to 10-9. Carlos Torres pitched a scoreless 7th, Jeurys Familia
pitched the 8th. Jenrry Mejia had trouble in the 9th
allowing a solo homer to Jay Bruce, his 16th on the year. He also
allowed an RBI single by Ryan Ludwick but got out of the 9th with
his 24th save. Mat Latos was the hard luck loser pitching 6 good
innings but gets charged with 3 unearned runs taking the loss. The Mets finish this road trip 4-2 and are
now 35-40 on the road; overall they improve to 68-75. Monday it’s back home to Citi Field to start a
10 game home stand. Monday night the Rockies are in town. Jonathon Niese (8-10 3.68) goes for the Mets, Jordan Lyles (6-2 4.35) goes for Colorado.
