The Morning Report – November 9 – Daniel Murphy. Starlin Castro, Chris Young, Paul Seward

I have to first apologize. Because nothing ever seems to happen for the Mets in the off-season, all we keep doing is talking about the same old subjects… shortstop… corner outfield... the rotation… and, of course, the future of second baseman Daniel Murphy.

I brought it up yesterday and hinted that he might get a qualified offer after the 2015 season. Funny me.

The sad part is this guy has done nothing wrong as a Met and will probably never bring a decent return in any trade the Mets could come up with during next season. Is trading your all-star second baseman the kind of signs you want to send to a young team trying to make the playoffs?

One of the comment makers probably put it best yesterday… play him in 2015 and wish him well. He’s been a good Met and hopefully Dilson Herrera will follow with the same success.

New York Mets minor league free agents -

RHP: Giancarlo Alvarado (AAA), Buddy Carlyle (AAA), Joel Carreno (AAA), Jeremy Hefner (Hi A), Ryan Reid (AAA), Miguel Socolovich (AAA), Ismael Tijerina (Lo A)

LHP: Angel Cuan (sorry Hobie)  (Hi A), Dana Eveland (AAA), Scott Rice (AAA)

C: Kai Gronauer (AAA)

1B: Brandon Allen (AAA), Allan Dykstra (AAA), Josh Satin (AAA)

2B: Anthony Seratelli (AAA)

3B: Brian Burgamy (AA)

SS: Dimas Ponce (Lo A)

This does not mean any of these players could come back and sign a new minor league deal with the Mets. I know for a fact that Satin is ‘shopping around’, but you might see him back in the Las Vegas 51st uniform come spring.

The backup first baseman job does look a little wide open if Satin, Dykstra, and Allen were to depart. Eric Campbell and Daniel Murphy currently serve as #2 and #3 in Queens, but these three departures would leave Jayce Boyd as the only 1Bman in Vegas and most probably the 24-year old Matt Oberste in Binghamton.

My guess is the AAAA Allen will be back plus you might see a new add-on for Binghamton.

From Bleacher Nation (Cubs) -

The Mets/Starlin Castro rumors are going to start popping up again (remember those?), it seems, and I’m disinclined to give them too much attention (because I don’t think that’s the likeliest route the Cubs take to acquire pitching). Buster Olney wrote about the Mets wanting Castro and maybe not wanting to part with Jacob deGrom OR Zack Wheeler for him. That’s fine. The Cubs would be crazy to do a straight up swap for one of those two anyway. Frankly, I’m just not terribly into the idea of the Cubs dealing Castro right now. http://www.bleachernation.com/2014/11/07/lukewarm-stove-not-trading-bats-for-arms-saunders-dodgers-braves-castro-mets/

I guess I should say something about the Yankees signing ex-Met OF Chris Young...

It was great to see that RP Paul Sewald has been putting up some decent numbers in the Arizona Fall League, after starting off so poorly. Friday night, he pitched two more scoreless innings, striking out four and walking none. He’s worked his ERA down to 7.45.

The assumption is he will return to Binghamton where he had three appearances last season. The righty was lights out for St. Lucie (40-G, 1.73) and, assuming he’s on some form of fast tract, he could line up for a Queens promotion any time after the all-start break (not that there’s any room for another righty).

I consider Sewald one of the few pure relief prospects in the system.

There in lies the contradiction of DM. We keep calling him an All Star 2B, but then immediately point out that he wouldn't likely bring anything of value in return, so there is a perception of high value in the part of Met fans, but practically none from other teams. Not sure the Mets deserve criticism for looking at DM the same way other teams do (meh, nice player) and evaluate their commitment to winning based on whether or not they keep a player that no one is willing to pay any meaningful price. DM is not viewed as an All Star 2B by other teams, so why should the Mets feel any different. Paying him a multi year contract would be drinking your own Kool Aid.

  2. Paul Sewald had some early bad outings in Az, but 17 K's in 9.2 innings is hugely impressive. I just drafted an article about some top Mets minor league relievers and left him off. I will add him in. He's been terrific in his minor league career up until now. His AZ #'s mostly reflect that he had only pitched up to High Class A, and these opponents are much better.

Hansel Robles has been great in 8 short relief outings, by the way. Another Mejia, and soon?

    wow

so it's OUR fault, writers of blogs?

    1. No I'm saying that Met fans look at DM as an All Star who needs to be retained or it would be a sign of lacking commitment to win, but no other teams view him this way. If the Mets trade him or let him walk, it is because they don't see him as an All Star, not because they don't want to win. The above post suggests that it would be a bad sign if they let him go, but in the same sentence it states that no other team feels the same way about DM. Hence the contradiction. Not bloggers fault just Met fans iver valuing him.

the simple fact that Sewald was used in the AFL speaks volumes of what the Mets think about him

  5. Murph will have decent trade value during the season - barring injury or slump

Teams always need a bat midseason, and folks always get hurt

Murph can play 3 infield positions adequately while providing decent offense - while he isn't worth 10 mill a year, he has value and someone will prove something decent in July for him - if the Mets can spare him

I doubt he fetches much now, but midseason will be different

  6. I still think Murpy is worthy of a mid-season trade by an American League team
