A Look at the Texas Rangers interest in Gee or Niese

TR Sullivan ‏@Sullivan_Ranger  -  Rangers expected to talk to Mets about P Jon Niese and Dillon Gee

Mack -  Texas has three lefty relievers on their 40-man…

Scott Barnes – AAA: 25-G, 1-ST, 3.69, 1.20, 31.2-IP, 1.20

Alex Claudio – 15-G, 2.92, 1.46, 12.1-IP, 14-K

Robbie Ross Jr. – 27-G, 12-RP, 6.20, 1.70, 78.1-IP, 51-K

They have three shortstops…

Elvis Andres – 619-AB, .263/.314/.333/647, 2-HR, 47-RBI

Luis Sardinas – 115-AB, .261/.303/.313/616, 0-HR, 8-RBI

Guilder Rodriguez -  12-AB, .167/.231/.167/.397, 0-HR, 1-RBI

and they have four outfielders…

Jake Smolinski – 86-AB, .349/.391/.512/903, 3-HR, 12-RBI

Leonys Martin – 533-AB, .274/.325/.364/689, 7-HR, 40-RBI

Shin-Soo Choo – .242/.340/.374/714, 13-HR, 40-RBI

Michael Choice – 253-AB, .182/.250/.320/570, 9-HR, 36-RBI

Texas seems short an outfielder and Sardinas doesn’t project out as a good replacement for Wilmer Flores, so I would target the 6-3 Barnes, a graduate from St. John’s University.

  1. Although Barnes is more ML-ready, his numbers are not impressive at all.

Ross looks more promising with what he's accomplished and has had a cup of coffee in the majors already.

The jewel here is Claudio whose numbers are pretty eye-popping. He's not been above AA, but you could start him in AAA and see how he does then push him to the majors if he succeeds.

  2. My assumption regarding Cludio was that Texas would hold on to their top lefty

  3. Claudio looks great - terrific control, and young. If Mets have to do Gee plus a prospect pitcher, I'd consider that.
