Tuesday night in Flushing, the Mets scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning and Jonathon Niese took it from there…the Mets win their 9th in a row beating the Braves 7-1.
New Met arrival Kevin Plawecki playing his first major league game notched his first major league hit with a single following a walk to Eric Campbell in the 5th. Wilmer Flores then singled to load the bases. Niese then hit a grounder that was bobbled by Phil Gosselin and all hands were safe and Campbell scored to make it 1-0. Curtis Granderson followed with a 2 run single (his first 2 RBI of the year) to make it 3-0. Juan Lagares capped the inning with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
In the 6th, Granderson came through again with an RBI single scoring Campbell to make it 5-0.
Cameron Maybin hit his 2nd homer against Niese so far this year (2) in the 7th to make it 5-1. Niese pitched 6 2/3 allowing 4hits 1 run (earned) he walked 4 and struck out 5. He was relieved by Erik Goeddel who walked his only batter. Alex Torres then came out to strike out Freddie Freeman to end 2 out 2 on threat. Carlos Torres pitched a scoreless 8th inning. Sean Gilmartin pitched a scoreless 9th.
Niese is now 2-0, his ERA on the season falls to 1.50, Trevor Cahill takes the loss falling to 0-2.
Granderson led the offensive charge with 3 hits and 4 RBI. Plawecki went 2 for 4 in his debut; he singled to right in the bottom of the 8th. He scored on Granderson’s bloop double down the leftfield line. Lagares capped the scoring with a sac-fly scoring Flores. Lagares has now hit in 8 straight games he drove in 2. Michael Cuddyer saw his 7 game hitting streak end.
The Mets now stand at 11-3 on the year. The best record in the National league and their best start ever. They are also 8-0 at home to start the season for the first time in their history as well.
Wednesday night it’s game two of the series. Dillon Gee (0-1 7.59) goes for the Mets, left Eric Stults (0-1 6.30) goes for the Braves.

ReplyDeleteNo matter what happens the rest of this year the 2015 Mets have given their fans a start that portends great things for this season and beyond. There is a lot of talent top to bottom unseen in decades for the franchise.
