Brevard County 2 - St. Lucie 1

The Brevard County Manatees retired the last 17 St. Lucie batters en route to a 2-1 win over the Mets at Space Coast Stadium on Monday night.

The Mets scored their only run of the game in the first inning on a two-out triple by Matt Oberste that plated Jeff McNeil.

The Mets led off the second and third innings with doubles, but could not push across a run.

The trio of starting pitcher Jorge Ortega and relievers Kaleb Earls and Casey Medlen limited the Mets to three hits. Ortega induced an inning-ending double play in the fourth after Amed Rosario reached on an error. Rosario was the final Met to reach base.

Ortega pitched a 1-2-3 fifth and sixth, Earls pitched a clean seventh and eighth and Medlen tossed a perfect ninth to close it out.

Rob Whalen, making his first start for St. Lucie, was the tough luck loser. He held the Manatees to two runs on eight hits in six innings.

Both Manatees runs scored on ground outs. Victor Roache’s fielder’s choice in the fourth tied the game 1-1. The go-ahead run scored from third on Omar Garcia’s double play ball in the fifth.
