The Harrisburg Senators converted seven walks into six runs en route to a 7-5 victory over the Binghamton Mets on Saturday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Every run the Senators plated initially reached base on either a walk or a hit batter in their first win of the series.
Harrisburg took broke a tie game in the ninth off reliever Chase Huchingson. The first two Senators reached base on a walk and a hit batter. Two batters later, Pedro Severino blooped a single into right against a drawn-in infield to plate both Kevin Keyes and Matt Skole giving the Senators a 7-5 lead.
After an injury to Robert Benicasa, Senators pitcher Abel De Los Santos was thrust into the closer’s role three pitches into the ninth inning. Binghamton got the leadoff man aboard on a Stephen Perez error at shortstop, his third of the series. Jared King singled two batters later to bring the go-ahead run to the plate with one out in the inning. De Los Santos hunkered down, striking out Brandon Nimmo swinging and Jayce Boyd looking to end the game. The win snapped Harrisburg’s three-game losing streak.
The Senators struck first with a run in the third inning on a Keyes single against Binghamton starter Luis Cessa. The B-Mets drew even an inning later, when Josh Rodriguez stroked a two-out single to right field for his third RBI of the season.
Domingo Tapia entered for the B-Mets in the fifth and proceeded to walk four consecutive Senators with two outs in the inning, giving Harrisburg a 2-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Ricky Hague roped a three-run double off the left-field wall to give the Senators a four-run lead. Tapia allowed four runs in less than an inning of work.
Binghamton continued to fight back, as Nimmo singled in a run in the fifth and Boyd followed with a two-run double to get the B-Mets within one. Binghamton tied the game in the sixth, when Albert Cordero doubled in a run on his second extra-base hit of the game. The score remained tied at five until the final frame.
Gilberto Mendez (1-0) got his first win of the season after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Huchingson (1-1) picked up his first lost after allowing two runs in his second inning of work.
The B-Mets starter Luis Cessa allowed an unearned run in four innings, earning a no-decision.
The B-Mets (6-4) close out their four-game series with the Harrisburg Senators Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. Binghamton RHP John Gant (0-0, 12.27) gets the ball against RHP Austin Voth (1-0, 3.00).
