Jayce Boyd’s first home run in 59 games proved to be the difference in the Binghamton Mets 3-2 win over the Akron RubberDucks Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Boyd’s home run came in the bottom of the sixth, capping the scoring.
The only two runs allowed by Binghamton were unearned, as Matt Koch and Paul Sewald combined to retire all 10 batters they faced out of the bullpen. It was Binghamton’s 12th one run victory of the season.
Binghamton began the scoring in the second inning, when David Cooper doubled to left field to bring in a run. It was his fourth RBI in seven games with Binghamton.
The lead was short lived, as Akron got on the board in the third. A Dustin Lawley error to begin the frame opened the door for the RubberDucks. The next batter, Bryson Myles, doubled to center field to tie the game at one. After retiring the next two batters, Michael Fulmer surrendered the go-ahead hit to Erik Gonzalez, who doubled to right field. Binghamton has committed a season-high 51 errors, leading to 25 unearned runs.
Akron took their 2-1 lead to the fifth inning. Eudy Pina singled with one out and proceeded to steal second base, his fifth of the year. Gilbert Gomez singled to center to drive him in. It was Gomez’s seventh hit of the year, but his fifth RBI.
Tied at two in the sixth, Fulmer put two guys on with a one out walk and the second error of the game from Dustin Lawley. Matt Koch came in and used one pitch to induce an inning-ending double play from Bryson Myles.
With the score tied, Jayce Boyd lined his first home run of the year beyond the left field wall to put Binghamton on top for good. It was his first home run since August 22, 2014, also against Akron.
Koch and Sewald kept the RubberDucks from getting a baserunner in the final three innings, closing out their 12th one run victory of the season.
Koch (2-2) earned the win for his 2.2 perfect innings of relief. Will Roberts (2-2) took the loss, allowing three runs and seven hits in seven innings. Sewald notched his seventh save in eight tries.
The B-Mets (23-18) continue their series against Akron Saturday, with a 7:05 PM first pitch at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton RHP John Gant (2-3, 4.18) gets the ball against LHP Shawn Morimando (3-4, 2.95). .
