Gavin Cecchini blasted a tie-breaking two-run homer to highlight a four-run seventh inning and Paul Sewald left the bases loaded in the ninth to steer the Binghamton Mets to a 7-6 victory over the Harrisburg Senators on Tuesday night at Metro Bank Park. Binghamton used four straight extra-base hits in the seventh, including homers from Xorge Carrillo and Cecchini, to earn their eleventh one-run win of the season.
Trailing by two, Binghamton orchestrated their comeback against the Senators bullpen. Carrillo greeted James Simmons by ripping the righty’s 1-1 pitch into the seats in left field for his second home run in the last four games. Eudy Pina followed with a double and Aderlin Rodriguez tied the game by depositing an RBI double into the left-field corner.
With the lead gone, Harrisburg dipped deeper into their bullpen, calling upon Gilberto Mendez. Gavin Cecchini sent his first pitch into the left-field seats, giving the B-Mets a 7-5 lead with his third home run of the season.
The advantage was Binghamton’s second of the game. They had drawn first blood on a two-run single by David Cooper in the first inning against Paolo Espino.
Harrisburg struck back with force in the second. After a leadoff single, Matt Skole sent his team-leading sixth home run of the season over the left-field wall, going the other way to tie the game.
Lara came close to limiting the damage at two runs, but failed to put Espino away. His pitching counterpart fouled off four pitches with two strikes before singling, prolonging the inning for the top of the order. Caleb Ramsey kept the inning alive with a two-out single and Tony Renda pushed the Senators ahead by dumping a two-run single into shallow left-center.
Lara got the hook after needing 44 pitches to get out of the second inning. Matt Koch took over and steered the B-Mets through three scoreless innings, allowing one single and fanning two along the way. Skole struck again in the sixth, launching a solo home run off Chase Huchingson to kick Harrisburg’s lead to 5-3.
After Binghamton posted four runs in the seventh, Beck Wheeler tossed a perfect seventh and Adam Kolarek breezed through a 1-2-3 eighth.
Sewald’s tightrope walk in the ninth started immediately as Dustin Lawley booted Pedro Severino’s grounder to start the frame. Adrian Sanchez followed with a single and Ricky Hague supplied a pinch-hit RBI single to cut the lead to one. Following a sac bunt and an intentional walk, Brian Goodwin flied out to shallow center, keeping Sanchez on third. Sewald kept him there for good by fanning Mario Lisson for his sixth save of the season.
Huchingson (2-2) earned the win for a relief corps that combined for seven innings, their highest total of the season. Simmons (1-2) was slapped with this first blown save of the year after failing to register an out in the seventh.
The B-Mets (22-16) continue their three-game series against the Senators on Wednesday morning at 10:30 AM. RHP Gabriel Ynoa takes the mound for the B-Mets.
