Las Vegas 51s' left-hander Steven Matz has faced the Reno Aces (@Aces) twice this year and has two dominant outings to show for it. The southpaw struck out 12 batters in seven innings to lead the 51s to a 7-2 win over the Aces Thursday night at Cashman Field.
Less than one week ago on Friday night at Aces Ballpark, Matz took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Reno to help the 51s to a 12-0 win.
The number two prospect in the New York Mets' organization (Baseball America), Matz allowed one run on five hits in his seven frames. The lone run he allowed was in the first inning when Jamie Romak singled to left-field to drive in Garrett Weber (@_weber5).
Romak's single gave the Aces a 1-0 lead and left the bases loaded for catcher Matt Pagnozzi (@MattPagnozzi). Pagnozzi flied out to center-fielder Darrell Ceciliani who fired a strike to the plate to cut down Kevin Frandsen (@KevinFrandsen) for an 8-2 double play to end the inning.
The game remained 1-0 until the sixth inning as Aces' starter Robbie Ray (@RobbieRay) was impressive on the bump.
Through the first five innings, Ray kept the 51s off the scoreboard and scattered five hits. He issued a walk to Daniel Muno to start the sixth inning, then struck out Matt Reynolds for the first out. Las Vegas catcher Johnny Monell singled to put runners on first and second, chasing Ray from the game.
Derek Eitel (@Deitel10) relieved Ray and allowed a RBI double to Brooks Conrad to tie the game. Two batters later, Travis Taijeron singled to score Monell and give Las Vegas a 2-1 lead. Ray was charged with the unlucky loss after leaving the game with a 1-0 lead.
Matz got stronger as the night went on, recording his 12 strikeouts in the final six innings. He struck out the side in the seventh and lowered his ERA to 1.84 on the season.
The 51s extended the lead in the seventh when Monell hit a three-run homer off reliever Willy Paredes.
After Reno cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the eighth, Las Vegas scored a pair of runs in the eighth to up the lead to 7-2.- team press release
