Robert Gsellman dominated Palm Beach for the second time this season as the St. Lucie Mets defeated the Cardinals 4-1 on Monday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium.
Gsellman gave up just one run in seven innings while striking out five and inducing three ground ball double plays. The lone run against him came in the seventh when Carson Kelly hit a home run with two outs.
On May 5, Gsellman blanked the Cardinals over eight one-hit innings at Tradition Field. Gsellman is now 2-0 vs. Palm Beach and has limited the Cardinals to one run and six hits in 15 innings with 15 strike outs.
The Mets are 6-1 in Gsellman’s starts. He is 5-0 with a 1.43 ERA.
The Mets scored all the runs they needed in the fourth inning against Rob Kaminsky. Michael Conforto was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then Matt Oberste doubled to put runners at second and third. Dominic Smith followed with an RBI single to plate Conforto. Oberste scored when Mason Katz’s throw home from right field sailed high to the back stop.
Smith scored later in the inning on a sac fly by Phil Evans to make it 3-0.
After Kelly’s home run cut the lead to 3-1 in the seventh, the Mets got the run back in the ninth. Yeixon Ruiz delivered a two-out RBI single to bring in Jhoan Urena.
Josh Smoker pitched a perfect eighth. He threw seven pitches, all for strikes, and struck out two.
Akeel Morris worked the ninth for the second straight day and picked up his fifth save. He walked two batters with two outs to bring up Kelly as the tying run, but he struck Kelly out to end the game.
The win was the second in a row for the Mets. They won back-to-back games for the first time since April 24-25.
Oberste, Smith and Urena went 2 for 4. Smith now has 10 RBIs in his last seven games. Team press release
Anyone know if this Gsellman is a promising prospect? Was he on anyone's radar? I keep hearing how dominant he is every start. A promotion in the near future?
