Mack’s Morning Report – 7-31-15 – Thursday's Game, Sandy Alderson, Carlos Gomez, Twitter, Mayo

Good morning.

There's been a lot of games this season that e have walked away with pain in our gut knowing we were inches away from a victory, but none may hurt more or have more importance than the complete collapse yesterday afternoon against the Padres.

The loss, plus the 1-0 Nats win against Miami, puts the Mets three games behind going into the three critical game series that begins tonight against Washington. Even more importantly is the fact that the Mets are four games behind in the loss column.

What has happened to Jeurys Familia

And if Jon Niese hit for himself in the bottom of the sixth inning, why was he taken out anyway in the seventh with only 87 pitches thrown?

I would guess, at best, the Mets to win two of the next three games against the Nats this weekend and close the gap to two games, three down in the loss column.

I just can't believe they let a 7-1 lead slip away in this game.

General Manager Sandy Alderson has taken on a fair amount of heat regarding his draft picks since taking on the responsibility in 2011 of returning the New York Mets to the playoffs.

Fans are quick to point out the lack of picks that have made the parent team so far. Michael Conforto joined Logan Verrett (2011), Danny Muno (2011), Jack Leathersich (2011), and Kevin Plawecki (2012) as the only draft picks that have made it to Queens.

However, let’s not forget that draft picks John Gant (21st pick – 2011), Casey Meisner (3rd – 2013) and Rob Whalen (12th – 2012) have brought Lance Johnson, Tyler Clippard, and Juan Uribe to the team this month and changed the 25-man into a squad that more resembles a playoff team.

Frankly, in my opinion, this is pretty good for five drafts.

MLB

I’m sure most of you are very happy with you first heard about the Carlos Gomez trade plus how easy it seems to have been to improve this team in the past week, but I walked away with this with a certain sense of being pissed that the Wilpons and Alderson & Company did nothing for five years.

On the surface it looks like the Mets stole Gomez for a pitcher recovering from TJS and an infielder without a position, but the real reason this deal supposedly got done was the fact that the Mets were willing to take on the remaining monies on Gomez’ contract. The same goes for Lance Johnson, Tyler Clippard, and Juan Uribe. This has always been a business and, as usual, money talks. In our case, as Mets fans, we simply had forgotten how this works since the Omar Minaya days.

But then, the Mets proves that yes Shirley, you still can fuck up a wet dream.

You’re going to hear about twenty different versions on why this deal didn’t go down but here’s the real reason:

Two teams agreed to trade three players (Wheeler, Flores, Gomez) pending the approval of each player’s physicals.

One of these players had played a portion of this season injured (Gomez) while another has been out the entire season recovering from survey (Wheeler).

We all assumed that any questions on a physical would be on Wheeler, but it turns out that it was Alderson questioning Milwaukee and Gomez’ agent, Scott Boras, on the condition of Gomez’ hip.

Sandy also… then… said they wanted Milwaukee to kick in some money on this deal. This was done after this deal was supposedly done.

Milwaukee got pissed about Alderson's aftereffect request for money and told him to suck an egg.

Eventually, Alderson didn’t get what he wanted or wasn’t happy with the results of what he had learned about Gomez’ hip and he pulled the deal.

Everything that happened Wednesday night… if it happened back in the day… would have been fine. The two General Managers would have kept their mouths shut and talked only to their VPs and doctors. Nothing would have been announced until all the “T’s” were crossed.

But that doesn’t happen in today’s Twitter world where ex-newspaper reporters are paid to beat other ex-newspaper reporters on info scoops. Accuracy takes a step back in this social media world and we’re left with a crowd at CitiField knowing more about this team than the manager and the shortstop playing with tears in his eyes and keep looking at the scoreboard to look for any announcement that he was traded.

It sure looked like the Mets handled this very badly, but it guys like Joel Sherman that blew it here.

And please don’t blame Terry Collins, who gets enough heat here from me and others on Mack’s Mets. No one from the front office told him about any trade while the game was being played so there was no reason to pull Flo out of the game.

It looked rough, but that’s the business of baseball.

Jonathan Mayo updated his Top 100 prospect list on Friday. The Mets on the list, and their rank, are:

            #18 - P          Steven Matz
            #19 – LF        Michael Conforto
            #84 – OF       Brandon Nimmo
            #96 – SS        Amed Rosario

Mack – I think this is the first time Rosario has made a Mayo list. It’s great to read his name here.

  1. To make things more bizarre in Mets world. They are 'reportedly' interested in Jay Bruce, who is owed MORE money than Gomez. No way Wheeler is enough if Mets want money back in that deal.

  2. I think we were all a little surprised that we were able to get Gomez for Wheeler and Flores. The return that the Brewers got back from Houston, in my opinion, is a much better package, although it doesn't include a potential frontline starter if Wheeler can increase his IP/start efficiency.

Either way, we didn't get Gomez and we still need to improve this team.

Cincinatti has a lot of things that could improve this team. You could have a Wheeler for Bruce swap.

You could ask for Bruce & Byrd and demote Conforto. This way you pretty much know exactly what you're getting from your OF the rest of the season.

You could ask for Brandon Philips. That's what the Yankees would do.

You could make them take Cuddyer back to offset the $ due to Bruce.

Hypothetically, Wheeler, Montero, Nimmo & Cuddyer for Bruce, Byrd & Phillips with no money changing hands. Bruce & Phillips are under contract for another 2 years for a total of $53M. Not sure I do that trade but that would definitely make this team better right now.

  4. Great analysis, Kevin, and Mack. Let's see today.

I often wonder if this team is cursed, and being perhaps 1 pitch from victory when the rains came is mind-blowing. I now believe they are, until I see evidence to the contrary.

Mattel just announced they will be selling a Weeping Wilmer doll this holiday season. You can buy the doll and then trade it.

Hard to get on a top 100 list, but perhaps Fulmer and Cecchini belong on it too.

  5. The more I think about the Gomez trade fiasco, the more I can't shake the feeling it was the arrogance of Alderson that destroyed it.
It has been evidenced many times how Alderson needs to not just make a good trade. He has to win the trade.
I can see the whole situation playing out exactly as reported.
    The players were agreed upon.
Alderson felt wonderful that he won another trade, thus proving his own brilliance once again in his own mind.
The medical reports come in. Where as, most other gms would realize the reports are not bad enough to flush the trade, Alderson felt that the margin of how much he would win the trade by was narrowed. His ego revolted. His arrogance led him back to request more.

Melvin probably, in not so polite language, reminded Alderson that he was accepting much more damaged goods in Wheeler and that he could easily take his Gomez to other teams and not have to deal with Alderson's crud.

Of course at that point Alderson took his Wheeler and Flores and went home.
So, I don't believe $$ was the real reason for the death of the Gomez trade in any way more than the role it may have played in Alderson's mind in helping him to increase the margin by which he would win the trade.

    Could be done soon.

  7. I agree, Bob. The next target should have been Parra -- the Mets have a CF problem -- and the cost would not have been Wheeler. But the bridge has been burned. Why is that? Because Milwaukee will not deal with Sandy again, even when it's in their best interest to include the Mets in any future talks. In ordinary negotiations, bridges do not burn.

I do not give Collins a free pass on Flores. I struck me as inconsiderate and out of touch. In two minutes, or less, he could have found out what was going on. Wilmer was a mess, an easy & compassionate substitution to make. Just take him out, even if all the facts are not in. The idea of blaming all this on Twitter is ridiculous & an embarrassment. Oldest manager, GM, and PR guy in MLB.

  8. Off-topic, but with money continuing to play a major role in every trade scenario, with the Mets giving up far better prospects than they would have to otherwise, I keep returning to the dumb Colon contract.

I got killed here on this site in March/April -- and sometimes quite rudely -- over the winter when I said that the contract for Colon was a horrible mistake. The overwhelming consensus was no, he was a solid innings eater, etc. I said it would be better for the Mets if he vanished. Just disappeared, sucked up by aliens.

In his last 14 starts, Colon has an ERA of 6.02. He's making $11 million. It was a completely unnecessary contract. Billy Beane drank Sandy's milkshake on that one, letting Bartolo walk and then, for the same money, signing a far superior Kazmir . . . who he then turned around and traded.

For a low budget team with no intent of competing in 2014, signing Colon was a disastrous move that continues to hurt the team -- and not just when he takes the mound.

The trade was done but it just wasn't enough for Alderson to accept it and walk away. He pissed off Milwaukee and lost what turned out to be a great deal compared to the one eventually went down for Gomez.

  11. I'm not liking the Jay Bruce for Wheeler deal. It just seems to be another Cuddyer that will block Conforto even longer. I was on board with Gomez. I wasn't totally upset when it didn't go through. I like Wheeler but it made sense. This doesn't. It is making a trade simply to make a trade.

I understand where you are coming at. I too would rather just activate d'Arnaud and concentrate on what's going on in the bullpen, but, trust me... the mind of Alderson works like he HAS to now make a deal so he can prove to the baseball world that he can out do what he screwed up with the Gomez deal.

My guess is Wheeler plus a minor leaguer is a goner for Bruce.

    Sometime today.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would hope Alderson's mind would realize that getting Bruce will not be enough to prove to anyone that he out did the Gomez trade.

    Bruce + Cespedes??? Maybe
Bruce + someone else of significance would be needed

Even after all this Flores drama, the Cubs are actively trying to move Castro and the Mets could be in on that also.

Lastly, still need a relief pitcher, especially now after what has happened to Mejia, the peaking of Parnell, and the failures of Familia.

  17. The Bruce for Wheeler has the potential of making SA look really bad. Bruce will be compared to Gomez as long as he is a Met. If he becomes Jason Bay version 4 and Gomez rakes Sandy should be out of baseball. I think this sucks. I would give 4 Bruce's for even 1 injured Gomez.
What happens to Conforto and Nimmo now?

How about wheeler for chapman or kimbrel? Or even Nimmo and Cecchini for one of them? I don't want Bruce, go for Blackmon or lesser upgrade in Revere. We need a centerfielder, so Lagares can go get his surgery....

      Delete
  18. Richard,

Why would you give 4 Bruces for 1 injured Gomez?

For those worried about Bruce being a LH hitter, he has better splits vs. lefties than Gomez does as a RH hitter.

That said, his numbers are slanted very home-heavy. Small ballpark in Cinn.

Mack, do you think there is any consideration to promoting Sewald, or does he have to wade thru the hellfires before they'd do that? Anyone have enough on a take on Sewald to know if he has the stuff to pitch in the majors?

The Mets/Bruce deal is still speculative so all we can do right now is talk about something that might not happen. We seem to be getting used to thant.

I'm a 'bird in the hand' kind of guy'. On paper TODAY, Bruce is a better defensive outfielder that anyone on the Mets, other than maybe a healthy Lagares.

Bat wise, there is some concern about his hitting in and out of his home park, but he's consistently produced better numbers than Nieuwenhuis, Cuddyer, Lagares has produced.

Lastly, I still feel Conforto will do very well over his career, but I would have liked to see him to get at least one hit other than the four he had in one game. Re: Nimmo... most scouts have him projected as a 4th outfielder.

The Mets need another big bat THIS year and Bruce, IMO, seems to fit that.

I think the Dario Alvarez and Akeel Morris fiasco will prevent any reliever to be promoted to Queens from a team below the AAA level

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have two words for you all to put the Gomez issue in context: David Wright.

Give Wright's injury the Mets are very gun shy on a potential chronic injury

And, Boras can say what he wants - Gomez's numbers are way down this year, and he has missed substantial time - there is a real risk he gets hurt and misses a lot of time over the next year and a half.

I imagine that after looking at Gomez's medical records the Mets asked for money to offset his injury risK - I am a on with that.

As far the Astros trade - don't discount Friers - he is a solid #3 arm with the potential to be more.

As far as Bruce - he is a real bat - he was hurt last year, but hit 30+ HRs a year 3 years in a row and his away numbers are not too bad - as is his LH splits

He is what we hope Conforto becomes - send Corforto to AAA for the rest of the year - Bruce is a massive upgrade over Conforto this year and next - and if Conforto pushes, Bruce will have good trade value next year

The only issue I have is he is another lefty - although if Wright comes back - that balances the lineup pretty well

    ReplyDelete
  23. Blackmon's numbers are Coors-inflated. I'd be rightfully weary if I were Sandy. Smart aggression is still the best policy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lew,

I agree with most everything you said.

"The only issue I have is he is another lefty - although if Wright comes back - that balances the lineup pretty well"—why does this matter if he can hit lefties well?

"… his away numbers are not too bad"—they're not awful but they're decidedly worse than his home numbers.

In 2013 his road OPS was .861 - higher than his home OPS

In 2012 it was .718 - not so good

      In 2011 it was .788

Apparently he is better on the road in odd years!

  26. His OPS this year on the road is .771 as compared to .887 at home.

He has 6 HRs on the road as compared to 11 at home.

The only thing he has more of on the road are ABs.

Career-wise, he's .743 on the road as opposed to .845 at home.

He's also a lifetime .186 hitter at Citi (granted, with 5 HRs).

  27. Sal Paradise- The reason for wanting Gomez over 4 Bruce is that Gomez can play any of the outfield positions. That leaves room for Conforto when he is ready in 2016. With the ball park factors Bruce isn't any better than Cuddyer. How many .250 hitting corner outfielders do we need?
Gomez gives you a gold glove centerfielder. If/when Lageras gets healthy Gomez moves to right and gives you 2 gold glove outfielders.
The Bruce trade would be slightly positive for 2015. It is terriable when Wheeler is back and Conforto is raking in AAA in 2016.

  28. when youre this poorly managed and a deeply flawed team, adding players that dont really fit the plan is just stupid. stick to the roadmap.

im sorry i dont think the mets are winning the world series this year and i dont think they are going to catch the pirate let alone the giants and get the second wild card or take the division. if going from 84 wins to 86 wins bu not getting into the playoffs is the goal, then sure make the trade, but id rather, ride with conforto and trade wheeler over the winter for a ss. not a flawed streaky hitter we will al be complaining about how much he strikes out for the next 3 years.

  30. Robb is right.

I don't think Bruce is the best fit. But I didn't want Gomez, either. Not for Wheeler at least. I think the Mets are right to be hesitant in trading for injured players. Already have enough of those.

  31. Random Friday thoughts-

Trade-that-wasn't: Sherman pretended he was in SA's war room and gave us a story equivalent to Dewt defeats Truman. Now all these folks are claiming to have been in SA's head. All fiction and, if correct in some miutia, purely accidental.. You get more history from one of those Ancient Alien shows.

Bruce: Yes a Grandy (LF), Legares, Bruce OF would be an upgrade offensively & defensively. If that is bigger differential than, say, Wheelr vs. Fulmer a year from now, it's a no-brainer. Wouldn't mind getting Hoover too (vs. a Chapman rental).

Familia: I give hima pass yesterday. Got 2 out on 3 pitches before the delay. Then 2 of the weakest hits imaginable be for the Upton HR (in a deluge where his slidr didn't break). So it goes. Parnell/Robles are the culprits.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If we get Bruce, that should have Conforto in LF and Bruce in RF next year. We're still going to need a CF and be too LH heavy....but, we might just be one bat short going into 2016. I can't imagine that Granderson is still here next year if this deal goes through.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Michael,

Bruce has better numbers against lefties this year than Gomez has as a RH hitter. But why are so bent on getting rid of Granderson? We'd be nowhere w/out him right now.

Personally I'd prefer Byrd to Bruce. Don't know why I'm not hearing his name instead. I like the fact that he's a rental. Get to keep Wheeler that way too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't see Grandy fitting here if Bruce is in NY for the next couple of seasons at least. I want Conforto to have a future and I can't see Sandy flipping Bruce after trading for him, plus he's younger than Grandy. Add to that we need a CF and I don't think Granderson can hold up there over a full season.

I'm not hellbent, it's just the way it looks like the situation will play out for 2016.

I agree with you about the Mets chances for the Wild Card this year. The only chance I see is for the Mets to beat the Nats and win the division.

The only way they can do that is much better hitting and Bruce can do that. He also adds a quality bat next year.

I wish I could look ahead and see the outlook for Wright but I can't.

At this point in my life, I'd like to see a real run for the pennant this year.

  39. You know.....this whole day could be playing out so differently.

Gomez could already be in place, freeing up Alderson to focus on something additional.

He could have been waiting for Upton ' s price to drop.
Or try to uncover a SS upgrade.
    Or starting pitching insurance.
Or even to try and just upgrade

Bruce ' s numbers may be whatever that are, but he still plays in that small park.
I always feel more comfortable looking at offensive production from other players that are playing in big parks, such as Los Angeles, San Diego, & Detroit.

That would lead me to looking at Upton, Cespedes, and even a player like Ethier.

  40. Prospects off limits in trades for rentals.
Fulmer, Herrera, Conforto, Rosario that is if it were up to me.

In play for an Upton or Cespedes. Nimmo, Cecchini, Smith, Molina, Ynoa, Urena, Becerra, Gsellman.
Would they be able to get it done from some combination of those prospects.

  41. As mentioned, I'd actually prefer Byrd over Bruce, I'm really not a fan of Bruce. In order, Gomez(lol), Cespedes(Cuban, not happening), Upton(wishful thinking), Byrd(cost less than Bruce), Bruce(don't want to move Wheeler just to block Conforto).

Byrd has already played here and succeeded, right handed back with veteran leadership and gives up flexibility for next season. He can split time with Conforto as well and let us FINALLY move Campbell of this major league roster.

I want 3-5 years of pennants, not one year of finishing in second place. my biggest problem with bruce is that he's an upgrade in the position we are best suited to have an upgrade in house and are already deploying considerable assets (money of a fixed budget) at.

I just think the market for wheeler will be better in the off season.

Id do a rental like upton, but for Cessa or Gsellman.

I thought the Gomez trade was a fair deal for the mets and a good deal for the brewers. bc it balanced win now without roadblocking the futures

also, peter gammons just tweeted the mets asked for a comp pic after looking at the gomez medicals to reduce their risk. which is exactly what i would have done. they just hedged and the brewers backed away. id bet then they asked for money.

  50. Mack - My questions are coming, but let me preface them with this: When the umps delayed the game with 2 out, none on in the 9th I said to my colleague, watch, Collins will let Familia get cold, bring him back in after 40 minutes and he'll blow the save. Word of honor, I called it. So 2 questions.

    1. Why in hell would Collins not bring in a fresh arm for one out?

  58. They were saying the Detroit wanted Kevin Gausman from Baltimore for 2 months of Cespedes. Seems crazy high.

Maybe we can get Cespedes and Rajai Davis for Nimmo and a Ynoa (although I'm sure they will want Fulmer).

Cespedes contract is weird where whomever owns him when the season ends has to release him and cannot resign him until well into the season. So essentially, you only get him for 2 months unless you get him to agree to sign long term before the season ends.

  60. Kevin -

I don't care how much the Wilpons has to pay Cespedes. It ain't out of my checking account.

What I would care about is the player cost for a 2-month rental.

I'm very happy with the minimal loss of players so far this season for the return... I hope the Mets don't panic here ad throw in the wrong player

  61. I agree with Mack that pulling Niese was the bigger faux pas.

Antediluvian, Familia had warmed up and threw 3 pitches for 2 outs .
A tie in the 9th with RISP Familia warms up along with Gilmartin, and the game goes into extras with Gilmartin on the mound. The Mets get a lead in the 11th, would you not get your closer up again?

You can 2nd guess everything. My convo with my son contemporaneously was: is playing in a deluge tougher on the pitcher or batter? He said "pitcher" as I said "batter" as the ball sailed over the fence. 20/400 foresight.

  62. Mack I don't care about how much they have to pay him. Word was they wanted a top prospect and that's absurd. Then again the Reds got the Giants top prospect for Mike Leake. Crazy shit happens everyday.

I wouldn't offer more than Nimmo and Ynoa. Detroit has to move Cespedes.

    1. Keep in mind, even though Detroit may or may not have to move Cespedes....
Detroit does not have to move him to the Mets.

  63. Alderson would not be in a position where he would feel pressure to panic if he acted during the winter or earlier this year, and of course if he finished the Gomez trade.

Alderson deserves every bit of praise or scorn he receives after the next few hours.

Here we go again: Mets close to trading for Yoenis Cespedes, many say deal is done PENDING PHYSICALS.

    1. I have a bad feeling we're going to overpay. Cespedes is the worst option of the rentals due to his price tag.

  65. If San Diego is looking for middle infielders, could they have interest in Flores?

Could that be part of an Upton trade?
Unite Wright with his buddy for a playoff run in NY?

  66. If we were to get Cespedes might as well go after Venable too.

  67. I got an idea how the Mets can trade for someone...

I'm going to bed down Mrs. Mack and be offline till game time...

    Night

  68. How about Jose Iglesias from Detroit?

Acquiring Iglesias and Cespedes would be a nice catch

  69. Looks like we're getting Cespedes for 2 minor leaguers. As long as it's no one too high up I'm alright with this, don't know how you guys feel.

I'd love to get Venable to go with him but it doesn't seem likely.

  70. And so it's done...
    Cespedes acquired by the Mets.

Could have been done two or three times before, if you count his international free agent signing.

I wonder how far down Alderson's list of preferred targets he had to go.

  71. Fulmer and Cessa the price for Cespedes??

Looks like Alderson paid the price for his arrogance.

    1. Yes it does...Fulmer for a rental is bad business. Oh well, now I'm rooting for Yoenis.

  72. Fulmer hurts but Cespedes helps right now. LGM!!!!

  73. @Bob

Cessa is a non factor his ceiling at this point in AAAA taxi squad guy.

Fulmer certainly has upside but it's not as an bonafide ace.....he could eventually become a low end #2 or a solid #3....but neither of those ceiling will have been reached with the Mets who have 3 bonafide Aces in Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard. A superb future #2 in Matz, and a solid #3 with #2 upside in Wheeler.

Say what you want about Alderson but you have to commend him for improving the team this much without having to sacrifice ANYONE in "Generation K 2.0"
