Wednesday night in Philadelphia, Michael Cuddyer went 3 for
5 with his 10th homer and 3 RBI; the Mets win their 6th
straight with a 9-4 win over the Phillies.
Cuddyer’s offense supported an amazing outing by Bartolo Colon. Colon
went 7 scoreless innings allowing just 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out
8 earning his 11th win on the season. The Mets took 3-0 lead in the
top of the 1st off Philly rookie Jared Eickhoff. Curtis Granderson led off and reached 2nd
on a 2 base error by Odubel Herrera. Yoenis Cespedes reached on an infield
single to make it 1st and 3rd. Granderson scored on a
fielder’s choice by Daniel Murphy and it was 1-0. Cuddyer then doubled to score Cespedes. Michael Conforto then singled home Cuddyer
and it was 3-zip. In the 6th Conforto doubled and scored on a single
by Juan Uribe. In the 8th Cuddyer stroked a long 2 run homer with
Murphy on to make it 6-0, for Cuddyer his 2nd homer of the series. Eric O’Flaherty started the 8th
inning and allowed 2 hits and a run that scored on a fielder’s choice by Andres
Blanco. Carlos Torres came on and allowed a 2 run double to Darin Rupp to cut
the led to 6-3. (All those runs charged to O’Flaherty). Tyler Clippard came on yielded
an RBI single to Jeff Francoeur to make it 6-4 before ending the threat. In the
top of the 9th, Juan Lagares reached on an error by Freddy Galvais.
Granderson then doubled and Lagares scored when the throw to second got away
from Galvais who was charged with 2nd error. Cespedes tripled home
Granderson for an 8-4 lead. Murphy
clubbed a sac-fly to cap the Met scoring. Clippard went on to pitch a scoreless
9th to earn his 2nd save as a Mets and 19th on
the year. Colon improves to 11-11. Eickhoff
falls to 1-1. Cuddyer, Conforto and Wilmer Flores had 2 hits apiece to pace the
offense. Murphy added 2 RBI in the win
as well. The Mets are now 11-1 vs the Phils in 2015. The Amazins are 14 games over .500 and stand at 70-56.
With 6 straight road wins they improve 7-1 on this road swing and 28-35 away from Flushing. The Nats lost to San Diego and the Mets now
find themselves 6 ½ game in front in the NL East. Thursday night the Mets go
for the clean sweep in the city of Brotherly love. Jonathon Niese (8-9 3.80) goes for the Mets.
