August 27th 2015 -- Mets 9, Phillies 5 (13 innings)

Thursday night in Philly, Daniel Murphy came through with a 2 run double in the top of the 13th breaking a 5 all tie. The Mets beat the Phillies 9-5 to win their 7th straight and sweep this 4 game set. The Mets fell behind in the third inning when Jonathon Niese yielded 5 runs.  With the bases loaded Jeff Francoeur came through with a 2 run single to make it 2-0. Aaron Altherr’s fielder’s choice made it 3-0. Darin Ruf then clubbed a 2 run homer, his 6th on the year and it was 5-0 Phils.  But the Mets staged another power soaked comeback. In the 4th David Wright singled off Aaron Harang and Travis d’Arnaud followed with a 2 run opposite field homer to make it 5-2, for d’Arnaud his 9th on the year. In the 5th Curtis Granderson singled and Yoenis Cespedes followed with a 2 run blast, his 8th as a Met and 26th on the year to make it 5-4. Two batters later Kelly Johnson hit a blast, his 12th on the year and 3rd as a Met to tie the game at 5.Niese survived his hellish 3rd. He went 6 innings allowing 5 hits, 5 runs (all earned) walking 5 and striking out 5.  Logan Verrett pitched a scoreless 7th, Hansel Robles tossed goose egg in the 8th. Sean Gilmartin sent the game into extra pitching a solid bottom of the 9th. He also retired the first two batters in the bottom of the 10th before being relieved by Carlos Torres who retired the side on an amazing 1-3-1 put out that ricocheted off Torres to a diving Murphy at first and whose desperation throw to Torres covering nailed Francoeur by a step.  The Mets scored 4 times in that 13th. Carlos Torres singled. Granderson walked. Murphy then hit his 2 run double. Murph scored on a throwing error by Phil’s losing pitcher Hector Neris ( 2-2) on a squib by Wright. Michael Conforto brought home the 9th run with an RBI single. Torres pitched 2 1/3 scoreless and picks up the win; he’s now 5-5. Jeurys Familia pitched the bottom of the 13th in a non-save situation as the bullpen tossed 7 scoreless innings. The Mets pounded out 16 hits on the game. Granderson led the way going 4 for 6.  Murphy went 3 for 6 with the 2 RBI.  Wright went 2 for 6, Conforto went 2 for 7. The win streak stands at 7, all on the road. The Amazins are 12-1 against the Phillies in 2015. They are now as season high 15 games over .500 at 71-56. They also climb to 29-35 on the road. The Nats won, so the Mets remain 6 ½ games ahead in the NL East. The Mets finish this road swing with a 8-1 record. Friday night it’s back to Citi Field to face the Red Sox. Friday night it’s Matt Harvey (11-7 2.57) going for the Mets.  Henry Owens (2-1 4.50) goes for Boston.
