DOWN UNDER: Top 13 Mets Minors Hitters in 2015

DOWN UNDER: Top 13 Mets Minors Hitters in 2015 - Tom Brennan

Another angle in the " Who's Hot?" minor league series for 2015:

Which 13 Mets minor league hitters have the highest batting averages, with at least 200 at bats across all minor league levels?  Here goes:

Darrell Ceciliani (AAA OF): .352.  He hit great before the Mets called him up. Even better...over .370...since the Mets sent him back down. Fine on base, breakthru slug %, a little high on Ks.

Dilson Herrera (AAA 2B): .350/.397/.529. Very nice. Young, too.

Danny Muno (AAA IF): .308...abbreviated stint in majors.  He always hits better as seasons wear on. This year, .333 after May.

Johnny Monell (AAA C): .318, sliding from earlier heights, still up there.

TJ Rivera (AA/AAA IF): .317 in 2015.  .317 for his career. So there are 317 reasons to appreciate him, more or less.

Gavin Cecchini (AA SS): .317...great start to 2015, month-long swoon, followed by a huge surge.

Jeff McNeil (Hi A IF): .317, good speed, fine fielder. Could use more pop.

Dominic Smith (Hi A 1B): .308....hitting .330 since early season struggles.  Just 20, future star with bat and glove.

Luis Guillorme (A SS): .312...super-consistent at plate all year, minimal pop, 55 ribbies, fine glove.

Wuilmer Becerra (A OF): .303, 37 extra base hits in a tough power league. Rock on.

Pat Mazelka (Lo A C): .363...he has 25 doubles and 5 homers in 201 at bats, just 25 Ks.  Hitting .446 in first 19 August games. Who could ask for more? And a 21 year old catcher, to boot.

Kevin Kaczmarski (Lo A OF): .352, some pop. Already 23, but quite a debut.

Luis Carpio (Lo A SS): I added him despite less than 200 at bats, because it is hard to be a SS in this org and get 200 at bats in a short season. But the just-turned-18-year-old is hitting .312 with a .388 OB%; it's only right I mention him.

Of course, this leaves out guys without .300+ averages, but who have shown superior pop, like Dash Winningham and Travis Taijeron, and guys barely off the .300 pace, like Matt Oberste and Eudor Garcia.

Not to mention the pretty fair called-up hitter Michael Conforto.

Lots to like in an organization where .300 hitters were very rare about 4 years ago.  As I recall there was one (TJ Rivera) in 2012 or thereabouts.  I liking having 13 a whole lot more.  We're lucky to have 13, in my opinion.

Whaddya think?

  1. All these fine hitters can look at our thunderous NY Mets and, like them, take their games to a higher offensive level.

Boy, Kevin Kaczmarski is red hot. My stats were thru the weekend. Kevin was on 6 of 8 times last night, and 23 times on base in his last 42 appearances over his last 10 games.
