Thursday night in Atlanta, Bartolo Colon was brilliant once again;
the Mets win their 4th straight with a 7-2 win over the Braves. Colon set his scoreless inning streak at 31.
He yielded a pair of runs in the bottom of the 7th but the Braves
were no match for him. The Mets took a 3-0 lead in the top of the 4th
off Shelby Miller. Juan Uribe singled to center. With 2 out Kelly Johnson
reached on an infield hit. Then Kevin Plawecki spelling Travis d’Arnaud hit a 2
run double in the gap right to make it 2-0. Colon came up and then singled, his
8th hit on the year driving in his 4th RBI and the Mets
had the 3-0 lead. In the 7th
Curtis Granderson and Yoenis Cespedes walked and Uribe blooped a single scoring
Granderson to make it 4-0. In the bottom
of the 7th Jace Peterson hit an RBI double scoring Nick Swisher from
first ending Colon’s scoreless streak at 31 innings. Andrelton Simmons followed
with an RBI single scoring Peterson and it was 4-2. In the top of the 8th,
Plawecki drove in his 3rd run on the game when his fielder’s choice
brought home pinch runner Eric Young Jr. from third. In the top of the 9th,
Uribe had his 3rd hit on the game driving in Granderson and Lucas
Duda with a double making it 7-2. Colon went 6 2/3 allowing 7 hits 2 runs
(earned) walking 1 and striking out 2. Dario Alvarez got the final out in the 7th
inning and pitched the 8th. Addison Reed pitched the 9th.
Colon gets the win improving to 14-11, now leading the team in wins. His
scoreless inning streak ends 1 2/3 innings shy of the Mets all-time mark by R.A.
Dickey in 2012, but it does set an all-time record for a 42 year old pitcher. Miller takes the loss he’s now 5-14. The Mets
had 10 hits on the night. Uribe led the way going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI, Plawecki
drove in 3 and Flores and Johnson had 2 hits apiece. With the win the Mets improve to 79-61 on the
year. Now a season high 18 games over
.500. Their once dismal road record
improves to just three games under .500 to 34-37. The Nats were idle, so the
Met lead in the NL east is now 7 ½ games, also a season high. Friday night it’s
game two of the series. Steven Matz (2-0
1.89) goes for the Mets, Matt Wisler (5-6 5.81) goes for Atlanta.
BARTOLOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
ReplyDeleteTold you he was going to be the ace down the stretch.
Bartolo is beautiful, it is wonderful when your back up catcher can hit and drive in runs, and great to see Dario Alvarez be effective again. Maybe he is the playoff LOOGY.
ReplyDeleteBecause....playoffs, here we come. Some other team can collapse this year (one already did, if you count the Nats). 7.5 games up is enough to talk smack.
One suggestion to the great Terry Collins: continue to give Murphy days off, as you did last nite. Don't need the quad re-emerging as an issue. Keep up the good work, Terry.
