Monday night in Flushing, the Mets rebounded from their
rough weekend against the Yankees with a 4-0 shutout win over the Braves. Jonathon Niese was on the hill for the Mets
and had his best outing in over a month for the Amazins. The snake-bit Shelby Miller went for the
Braves.
In the top of the first the Mets loaded the bases and took a 1-0 lead on grounder by Travis d’Arnaud. Curtis Granderson scored on the play, but Danny Garcia dropped a relay throw from Adonis Garcia going for the double play, but Daniel Murphy was caught napping and was retired to end the threat. In the bottom of the 2nd with one out Michael Conforto hit an opposite field homer, his 8th on the year to make it 2-0. In the 7th, Michael Cuddyer pinch hit for Reed and singled. He was pinch-run for by Eric Young. Curtis Granderson then singled and reached 2nd on an error by Cameron Maybin in center. Murphy was next and made up for his mental lapse in the first as he stroked a 2 run double down the right field line to make is 4-0.
On hill Niese was sharp lasting 6 innings allowing 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out two. He was removed after 6 innings and only 88 pitches. Addison Reed pitched a scoreless 7th, Tyler Clippard pitched the 8th and Jeurys Familia pitched the 9th in a non-save situation. Offensively Yoenis Cespedes seems to have broken out of his slump going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Half of Conforto’s 8 home runs this season have come to left field. Niese gets the win improving to 9-10. Miller takes the loss he’s now 5-16. With the win the Mets improve to 85-65 on the season and 48-28 at home. The Nats were rained out on Monday so the Mets lead in the NL East is now 6 ½ games as the magic number falls to 7. Tuesday night it’s game two of the series. Logan Verrett (1-1 2.89) goes for the Mets, Matt Wisler (5-8 5.63) goes for Atlanta.

Back on track... good.
ReplyDeleteNice win.
ReplyDeleteGood to see Niese perform well.
Good to put one more win worth of pressure on the Nationals.
It was a great night to be at the game. Perfect weather, great seats.
ReplyDeleteKudos to Niese. Conforto impresses mightily, Cespedes' double off the left field wall had more exit velocity than perhaps any hit I have ever seen, you should have heard it thus against the wall, and as he motored from first to second, I swear he looked faster than prime time Jose Reyes.
And Murph put a couple of sweet swings on the ball.
Grandy is also proving my frequent 2014 complaints about him to be totally dead wrong in 2015. Great lead off hitter, and my apologies. He has been the catalyst.
And the Nats sit in the rain and helplessly see their magic # shrink to 7. Sweet.
Offense is better and more dangerous with Conforto in lineup.

That Conforto looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if he can hit LHP?
Oh, screw that, let's not even find out!
(11 ABs vs. LHP this year.)
