Mack’s Morning Report – 3-8-16 – Jacob deGrom, David Wright, Chase Utley, Daniel Murphy, Bartolo Colon, Steven Matz

Good morning.

The Jacob deGrom request for more money is not going away.

DeGrom was asked last week’s question again this week which got the following response –

‘I’ve already talked about it, me and my agent. This was last week.’
No one wants an unhappy deGrom in camp, but technically he isn’t free of his commitment to the Mets under his current situation until 2021 (with arbitration raises beginning in 2018). And, his current age of 27 has be taken into play also.

But, reporters are reporters and they NEVER let a juicy tidbit like this one go.

More at 11…

Single ticket Las Vegas tickets went on sale yesterday.

Josh Satin has signed with the Padres.

The Mets will not be using  David Wright this week -

The Mets are taking extra precautions to ensure that Wright will be available for most of the upcoming season. Wright was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in May last year, which kept him out of the Mets' lineup until early August. Wright hit .289 /.379/.434 in 38 regular season games, and he appeared in all 14 Mets postseason games, the highlights of which were his two-run single against the Dodgers in the NLDS and home run in the World Series. Overall, Wright hit .185 with one home run and seven RBIs during the Mets' postseason run.

David Lennon had nothing better to write about than Chase Utley

There’s no point in pursuing this, and the Mets should just drop it. But when the question was posed Sunday to Terry Collins, it didn’t appear that he was ready to move on just yet.

“I guess the easiest way to put it is we have a new slide rule and there’s a reason why that rule’s been put in,” Collins said. “One of the major reasons is because of what happened to Ruben. I wasn’t in the meeting. I wasn’t there for their decision, so we’ll go play baseball.”

To me, that sounds a lot like, we’ll go play baseball, and in the process of playing baseball, we may have some unfinished business to take care of.

Mack – Trust me… this is far from over, especially if Utley comes to bat against Noah Syndergaard.

I can’t believe how little time it took for the press to turn against Daniel Murphy

I don’t care that we didn’t want to re-sign Daniel Murphy.

I don’t care that he wanted to come back to us and we spurned him.
What I do care about is that he shoved it in our faces, like a jealous ex girlfriend and signed with the Nationals.

Daniel Murphy, I do NOT wish you the best moving forward in your career. I hope that you spend your entire contract with the Nationals, and you never win a single playoff game again.

I’m sorry that it had to be this way, but I hate the Nationals, and now I hate you too.

Mack – This is so sophomoric and over the top and it comes from a second level blog entry. I would have hoped we were all on to the positive reporting of this year’s team; however, some aren’t and this guy is one of them.

Scheduled to pitch on Monday at home vs. Tigers –

Bartolo Colon, Buddy Carlyle, Jeurys Familia, Zack Thornton, Jerry Blevins, Josh Smoker

Lineup vs. Tigers

Alejandro de Aza, Astrubel Cabrera, Yoenis Cespedes, Lucas Duda, Neil Walker, Wilmer Flores (3B), Travis d’Arnaud, Eric Campbell, Wuilmer Beccera

Starters Vs. Cards –

Dilson Herrera. Ruben Tejada (3B), Micahel Conforto, Kevin Plawecki, Marc Krauss, Matt Reynolds, Danny Muno, Travis Taijeron, Ty Kelly, Steven Katz

Cardinals observed a moment of silence for Shannon before today’s game in Jupiter.

Ruben Tejada wasted little time and flared a single into right in the first…

Bartolo Colon’s speed on his fastball last year averaged 88… he hit that on his second pitch yesterday. Anthony Gose triple and Casey McGehee single makes it 1-0 Tigers… Colon strands two in the first… perfect third… 3-IP, 1-R, 2-K

Colon: “It’s very exciting particularly because it means I’m back here with the Mets. The most important thing is that I’m healthy.”

Arnaud: “Colon was money.”

Steven Matz walks one in the first but retires three other batters in the first (0-0)… strikes out the side in the second… nasty curve… mid-90s… RBI double by Stephen Piscotty in third (1-1)… done after 3-IP… 1-H, 2-BB, 43-P, 25-Ks, 18-balls

Matz: "I think it was good that they pushed us back a little bit. Give us some time to get our arms ready for game-action.”

Plawecki: “Matz looked great.”

Warthen on Matz: “Awesome.”

Excellent defensive play at shortstop (came in on ball) by Matt Reynolds (having nice camp so far)…

Mike Pelfrey throwing against the Mets for Detroit… 1-2-3 first inning… picks off Neil Walker in the second… Walk (Campbell), error (Bucerra), and walk (D Aza) loads bases in third…

Ty Kelly singled in the second…

Mets strand five baserunners in first two inning against the Cards…

Travis d’Arnaud throws out Andrew Romine after single…

Lucas Duda opposite field hit… 2-run homer in fifth…

Kevin Plawecki singles in the third…

Danny Muno RBI double in the third (1-0 Mets-Cards)…

Logan Verrett replaces Matz… tosses scoreless first inning…

Astrubel Cabrera 2-run single with bases loaded (2-1 Mets)… followed by Yoenis Cespedes single (3-1 Mets)…

Antonio Bastardo strands one in a scoreless inning…

Jeff Walters in at Jupiter… gives up 2-run double (4-1 Cards)… rally started with Tejada error… gave up five runs in the fifth (6-1 Cards)…

Neil Walker homers in fourth (4-1 Mets)…

Gabriel Ynoa in for the sixth in Jupitor… two soft outs to end the innings…

Jeurys Familia pitches a perfect fifth at Tradition… 2-K, 92-94…

Travis Taijeron 2-run hit in Jupiter’s sixth (6-3 Cards)…

Jerry Blevins gives up a run in the sixth… 6-2 Mets

Jeremy Hefner in to pitch against the Mets in Jupiter…

Marc Krauss rbi-double in seventh… 6-4 Cards…

T.J. Rivera now playing… wait for it…in left field... RBI single in the eighth (7-2 Mets)…

Josh Smoker had scoreless inning, hitting 97.

Mets beat Tigers, 7-3… lose 9-4 to Cards… overall record: 3-2-1

Four errors today vs. Cards: Plawecki (throw), Krauss (missed catch), Taijeron (fielding), Ashley (throw)

          Mack –

Thoughts… so far, holding back the starters seem to be a good idea… Rivera and Taijeron big hits with a bat in their hands… my guess is Walters will be one of the first camp cuts…

  1. I had my fun with the 'pulled a Murph' quotes time and again last year but I always respected his effort, loyalty and fact that Mets probably dont make world series in 2015 without him.....

  2. Matz "looked great, awesome"...why I picked him my # 7 favorite Met. Because we will say that a lot this year.

Taijeron 5 for 12 so far. The next Andrew Brown?

Colon can throw 80 and be effective.

  3. I still prefer to believe the deGrom situation is being blown out of proportion by bored media in the spring.
The brutally honest truth (in my opinion) is that its not the Mets fault that deGrom signed as a college guy instead of a high school/international teen. And he immediately had TJS. As far as I understand it the organization obviously took fare of this former 13th round pick very well along the way. I think he wants to stay and the Mets want him to stay. He'll get life changing money in his second contract and his hair alone will bring in plenty extra.

I agree with you about the Mets press in this story, but it could get worse if deGrom keeps reading the stuff these shills put out and starts to drink the Kool Aid

  5. I again submit my NEW Stat: THE DANNY.... It can be a defensive play on which an error cannot be charged, although it's an obvious mistake---

The best example of this is when he charged a Sacrifice Bunt (as a 2nd baseman) instead of covering 1st base. Not an error?./.... it's a DANNY

Boneheaded Baserunning, Running into oputs or forcing a runner ahead of you?...Those are Both DANNYS!

You can even provide a Grade for DANNY's.... half pointers.... One Pointers, and even a DoubleDanny for a play that meets specific Scoring rules: added an out and a run?---That's TWO Danny Points!!!

I admire and like Murphy...mostly limited to him holding a bat and standing at the plate. Once he leaves the Batter's Box, he's a TERRIBLE Baseball Player.

  6. I believe the Mets have built this great team and they are not stupid enough to screw it up by playing Scrooge. Fans will show up in droves to see the most exciting team they've has since the mid 1980s, money will pour In, and they will spend much more while avoiding zany spending. Right now, I am all about enjoying the 2016 banquet set before us.
