LAST TIME OUT: The B-Mets came back from two separate deficits but gave up four runs in the top of the ninth and fell to the Akron RubberDucks, 9-6,Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Andrew Barbosa struck out seven and allowed four runs, three earned over six innings. Dominic Smith went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI and Colton Plaia was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Tyler Pill toes the rubber for the B-Mets hunting his third consecutive win. Pill earned victories against the Portland Sea Dogs in each of his past two starts, most recently on Wednesday in Portland. He allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings with four strikeouts in a 6-3 Binghamton win. Pill is 2-0 in two career regular season starts against Reading. He started game one of the EDCS in 2015 and took the loss with seven runs allowed on 13 hits in five innings.
READING STARTER: RHP John Richy will make his second career Double-A start tonight after taking a no-decision Tuesday in New Hampshire. He allowed three runs and six hits in 4.1 innings. Richy made one April start for Clearwater (PHI: High-A) and was 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA before joining the Fightin Phils. Originally a third round selection by the Dodgers in 2014, he was acquired by Philadelphia in the trade that sent Chase Utley to Los Angeles in August of 2015.
THE NATIONAL LEAGUE GAME: For only the third time this season, there will be no designated hitter on the B-Mets lineup card as two NL affiliated ballclubs face off. Binghamton is 1-1 against NL affiliates in 2015, splitting a rain-shortened series against Harrisburg 4/12-4/13. Matt Oberste has been the B-Mets regular DH, appearing in 16 games at that spot. He pinch hit in both games against Harrisburg went 0-for-1with a walk.
STREAKING: Four separate B-Mets have hit in at least four-straight games. Colton Plaia has a four-game hitting streak, Victor Cruzado and Matt Oberste have hit in five straight and Dominic Smith has a six-gamer. Smith owns the longest B-Mets hitting streak this season at eight games.
PITCHERS WHO RAKE: Tyler Pill will get his first at-bats of the season tonight against the Fightin Phils. He is a career .422 hitter (19-45) with a home run, eight RBI and 11 runs scored. Pill went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in his 9/2/15 start at Reading. He was both an outfielder and a pitcher in college and was a career .336 hitter at Cal State-Fullerton. B-Mets pitchers are 0-for-3 with a walk in 2016
NINTH INNING WOES: The B-Mets allowed four runs in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 9-6 loss to Akron, the most runs they have allowed in an inning this season. Three prior times Binghamton had surrendered three runs, most recently in the first inning 5/1 at New Hampshire.
Tyler Pill gets to swing the bat tonight. Worth checking the game out just for that.
