Portland 6 - Binghamton 2

Matt Oberste belted a two-run homer, his second in as many days, but it was not enough in the Binghamton Mets’ 6-2 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday night at Hadlock Field. The B-Mets went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position in their sixth straight defeat. Oberste compiled his second three-hit game of the season in the losing effort.
Sea Dogs starter Keith Couch kept the B-Mets in check over six scoreless innings. The righty stranded two in scoring position in the fourth and left another runner on third in the sixth as he navigated into the seventh.
Trailing by four, the B-Mets chased Couch from the game by getting the first two aboard in the seventh. Reliever Chandler Shepherd put out the flames by getting LJ Mazzilli to roll into an inning-ending double play.
Binghamton’s lone offensive highlight came in the ninth against Rob Wort. Following a leadoff walk, Oberste belted his third homer of the season over the 37-foot left-field wall to put Binghamton on the board. Two more B-Mets reached before De La Cruz bounced out to second to end the game.
The Sea Dogs forced the B-Mets to play from behind by putting two runs on the board in the first off Robert Gsellman. Ryan Court pushed the Sea Dogs’ first run across by chopping a run-producing fielder’s choice to short. Nate Freiman, making his Hadlock Field debut, smoked an RBI double into the left-field alley to kick Portland’s lead to two.
Gsellman settled down to put down 11 of the next 12 batters before running into trouble in the fifth. With two outs, Henry Ramos plated Rainel Rosario from second base with a single to right.
Portland threw three more runs on the board against B-Met reliever Logan Taylor. Wendell Rijo zipped an RBI single into left in the sixth and Freiman deposited a two-run double into the right-field corner in the seventh.
Gsellman (1-2) struck out five and allowed three runs on six hits over five innings in the loss. It matched his shortest outing of the season. Couch (1-0) went six blank innings to pick up his first win as a Sea Dog since August 22, 2014.
