For the third time in four games, two runs was enough for the St. Lucie Mets to get a win. They beat the Charlotte Stone Crabs 2-1 on Wednesday at Tradition Field to remain in a first place tie in the FSL South.
The Mets broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning without putting a ball in play. Crabs starter Hunter Wood walked Patrick Biondi and Lednier Ricardo to start the inning. A passed ball on catcher Nick Ciuffo advanced both runners. Edwin Fierro was brought in and he threw a wild pitch that allowed Biondi to score from third to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.
Mike Hepple pitched a perfect eighth. Corey Taylor induced a double play ball and got a fly out in the ninth to earn his fifth save.
The win went to Josh Prevost, who made his best start of the season. Prevost limited the Stone Crabs to one run on eight singles in seven strong innings. He walked one and struck out five. He struck out Andrew Velazquez to strand the go-ahead run on third base in the seventh.
The lone run the Crabs scored came on a sac fly by Wilmer Dominguez in the seventh.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first when Champ Stuart walked, stole second, went to third on a sac bunt and scored on a ground out by Kevin Taylor.
The Stone Crabs outhit the Mets 9-4. The Mets went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. They have now gone 3 for 31 with runners in scoring position in the last three games but are 2-1 in those games. The Mets last three wins have been by the scores of 2-0, 2-1 and 2-1.
Patrick Biondi went 2 for 2 with a walk. He has back-to-back two-hit games.
Ciuffo went 4 for 4 for the Stone Crabs.
