Mets News -- Some Dire, Some Good

Let's have the bad news first.  Steven Matz has been diagnosed with a bone spur in his pitching elbow which the club has acknowledged already may require surgery.  If so, what is the course of action?

I'd go with Sean Gilmartin (lefty replacing lefty) to tide them over until Zack Wheeler is deemed ready.

Even if it's a matter of a relatively short DL stint, you still need a plan.  Just don't make it Logan Verrett.

On the more positive note, Yulieski Gourriel posed in some Instagram photos today in Mets gear.  I don't know if he did the same when he worked out for the Dodgers, but I'll take whatever encouraging signs I can get.

  1. Bone spur is better than most of the possible alternatives. Not sure who I'd throw out there. Maybe they'll keep stretching out Robles (I don't think this will happen, but he seems to have thrived in multi-inning stints). As to the Cuban, I still feel as if the signing of Reyes will give them enough wiggle room to justify not making the investment, but if he's anywhere near as good as advertised, I'd probably sign him. Problem is that what they really need now is someone to play RF who can add something offensively.

  2. Sign Cespedes' buddy Gourriel. After all, I know we have a killer offense already, but what the heck (actually, the offense IS killing - fans' interest). Sign him.

I like the idea of getting Robles out there to replace Steve.

If it is a simple chip removal surgery, what is time out, 8-12 weeks?

In Brooklyn last night, Jose was Jitless again. Toughest hitting league in all of sports.

  5. Bill, king of the small samples. I guess last year's entirety of a 2.67 over the course of a full season was meaningless...

  6. Reese to your point, GILMARTIN was great in most AAA starts, but torched in a few. I'd take that at the major league level.

  7. What we really need is a LEAD OFF hitter please!!!! A year and a half more of Grandy and w/o a lead off hitter TC will just keep putting him in the top spot. Hopefully Reyes will help but with our pitching problems it's really gonna be a tough haul for the Playoffs. I'd flip Loney and Grandy as it's worth a try unless they plan on Reyes playing a bigger roll. It would be interesting knowing whether or not they would have signed Guerriel if Reyes wasn't available because I think the tryout was just for show and like the old Giant GM George Young once said: whenever they say it's not about the money ....then it's definitely about the money as we have certainly found out since the Madoff mess with no end in site.

  8. Muno released! Now Gourriel is a must sign! Kidding aside, I hope Gourriel does sign if he looks like the real thing. Good luck to Muno.
