Reese Kaplan -- Reyes Reunion as Soon as Saturday

Today the Rockies placed release waivers on embattled shortstop Jose Reyes.  It signaled that no one was interested in taking on both his baggage and his contract.  On Saturday he becomes a free agent, available for major league minimum pro-rated for the 70 games already played.  That means he'd cost the Mets the same as they're paying Rene Rivera and Matt Reynolds.  That's a bargain in anyone's book.  The question is whether or not the squeaky clean image protectors will allow it to happen?  Then again they did give Marlon Byrd, Bartolo Colon and others chances...but they dispatched K-Rod for the proverbial bag of balls once his anger management issues embarrassed the club.  Still, the reaction to Jose Reyes taking the field would be one of cheers greatly drowning out the jeers, so I think it's a fait accompli.  After all, committing to Yuliesky Gourriel or making a trade takes real money and guts, things that are usually in short supply in Queens.

  1. Sign Jose, absolutely, and consider Valencia, consider Gourriel. Jose and one of those would put smiles on Met fans' faces...except for the ones who do not understand that human beings can make mistakes, sometimes big ones, but are capable of change.

I was impressed when I saw the replay of Reynolds' opposite field maiden homer - shows that there is moderate power lurking there, as I suspected all along. Maybe he'll earn his utility stripes yet.
Ruben hitting 4 for 23 since his recent return to the minors, BTW.

  3. It's almost as if the guy filling out the lineup card doesn't have a clue...

  4. Reyes takes the pressure off this FO to sign the Cuban. They'll happily deal with a week or so of awkward coverage to save themselves $30mm or so. If he plays well at the pro-rated minimum, it's obviously a good deal for them. But if the Cuban turns out to be as good as advertised, the price for bringing Reyes back may turn out to be very high.

  5. Yeah I'd love to know who they sent to watch Gourriel because yes Reyes does take the pressure off the FO and it's how this team operates. It's SO fustrating to ALWAYS be compared to the Evil empire like it or not and know they'd sign Gurriel in a min. and if it didn't work out just move on. Will this ownership ever operate like that again? Probably not just like last night were do I start....if Grandy were hitting .100 he'd be leading off and did TC have to start Johnson. Reynolds actually hit a game winning dinger Wed. and gets rewarded by riding the pines its just crazy but has been the norm around here since the Madoff mess as it's business as usual.
