A REMARKABLE SEASON by Tom Brennan
What a remarkable season. Major injuries to Wright, Duda, Harvey, deGrom, Matz, Lagares and Walker, the non-return of Wheeler and Mejia, lesser but still significant injuries to Cespedes, Flores and Cabrera - all that and:
Somehow we get Wild Card home field on game #161 after going 27-12 in the past 39 games. We get to trot out the rookies for a meaningless game 162 while the Cards and Giants duke it out on (for them) do-or-die game # 162.
We shatter the team's home run record, and trot out two guys who were pummeled in Vegas, in Lugo and Gsellman, and they go 9-2 for the Mets since August 23. Remarkable.
We somehow pick up James Loney cheap, and he does a remarkable fill in job for Lucas Duda. And Jose Reyes overcomes a dark moment and becomes a huge and remarkable part of the fabric of this team once he got here - indispensable. Remarkable energy, as always.
One wondered if Curtis and Jay would ever start to play, and then in September they were more than OK - they were remarkable.
A remarkable 51 saves by Familia and equally remarkable set up pitching by Addison Reed.
And TJ Rivera, like Gsellman and Lugo, is forced into a key September role fresh out of Vegas - and is outstanding at .333.
More remarkables than one can share.
What a remarkable season, whether we win that Wild Card game Wednesday or not. If they do win, it will be remarkable - but not the least bit surprising.
Let's Go Mets.
I normally kill Collins for his stupid decisions but given the injuries with this team, I have to give the Imbeciles his dues. This has been the best managing he has done with the Mets.
ReplyDeleteCollins has done well, but it is so good when guys are put in and unexpectedly excel. Makes everybody look good.
ReplyDeleteIf they did the expected and flopped, it's on Terry. But when the moves succeed, it's just luck. Wow!
Deleteupdating my 2017 25-man opening day outfield on Monday morning...
ReplyDeleteLook with very few exceptions everyone complains about their manager it's your right as a fan:). The main plus with Collins is his players seem to love him and isn't that really what matters most. I'm as bad as anyone when it comes to bashing managers but I have to give TC his due.
ReplyDeleteThey do really seem to love the gent.
DeleteHey Mack,
ReplyDeleteIf Confoto is out of the roster in favor of Campbell, I may not eat soup again in my life.
I'm allergic to Soup. It happened recently.
Delete(Conforto in, no soup for you...)
ReplyDeleteSkip the Soup, i'll have the Conforto Salad
