FLASH - Neil Walker

Neil Walker on Monday accepted the team’s $17.2 million qualifying offer for next season, WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman reported.
If he had rejected the offer, Walker would have become a free agent. Had he signed elsewhere, his new team would have had to forfeit its top unprotected draft pick in 2017 to the Mets. The top 10 selections in the draft are protected.

Walker, 31, batted .282 with 23 home runs and 55 RBIs in 113 games before his first season in Queens was cut short by a back injury. Walker earned $10.55 million in 2016.

Mack - For me, this is a win-win.

The Mets get back their second baseman, even if it is only for one year. Personally, I would rather seen a 3-year deal worked out here. I always go with the proven talent than the projected ones.

For Walker, he gets paid in 2017 more than any other team would have paid him for his healing body.

Good move guys.

  1. Hopefully the front office did their due diligence and didn't look at his back with rose colored glasses

  4. Well, you will now see another nail in the Cespedes coffin. I warned this would happen if they made the QO. Walker would be foolish to turn it down because no one was touching him with a 10 foot pole until they saw he was healthy. Since they can't move Granderson or Bruce until they resolve the Cespedes situation, their market will dry up pretty quickly knowing how desperate the Mets are to shed salary should through some miracle they ink Cespedes to a new contract. I'm sorry, Mack, but this is a bad deal for the Mets and hampers their ability to move dead weight for an adequate return. Don't get me wrong -- I think Walker's a very fine player who got short shift due to the monster season of the guy he was replacing, but he's not worth $17.2 million. He's probably worth about $12-$14 million. That extra $5 million could be used to pay for shoring up the bullpen since you are going to be missing your closer.

  5. Mack...
    Here is some optimism....
    Regarding Familia:

If he does miss some of the beginning of the 2017, it will help his body recover from the extreme over-use he has been the subject of for the past couple of years.

  7. Yeah this is a bad deal IMO. They had capable reserves to come close to his numbers at a fraction of the cost (Reyes, Flores, and TJ).

  9. I dont see this as any hindrance to Cespedes. If they dont sign him it wont be bc of the money in 2017. it will be bc some team either went a year or two longer or at a number they werent comfortable with. i mean if someone offers 7 years 175 mm, walker has nothing to with them not resigning YO. and i dont think they are getting beat in 4 year deals bc of money. if its 5 years it will be the years not the total money.
