FLASH - CL - Jeurys Familia

A New Jersey judge agreed Thursday to drop the simple-assault charge against New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia, ending the legal proceeding stemming from a domestic violence allegation. Municipal court judge John DeSheplo accepted Fort Lee prosecutor Arthur Balsamo's recommendation that the misdemeanor charge be dismissed. Balsamo had met with Familia's wife, Bianca Rivas, before Thursday's hearing in Fort Lee Municipal Court. Rivas, represented by her own attorney, did not wish for the case to be pursued.

  1. Now, if there is any justice, Familia will not be suspended. After all, in a similar situation in which Aroldis Chapman choked his wife, slammed her into a wall and then unloaded 8 shots from a gun into his garage wall, he got a mere 30 games.

Then again, the Mets don't have that kind of luck and/or ability to pay off judges.

  2. My guess is that there will be no suspension since his wife moved so quickly to turn these events around.

  3. Could the judge also help us by coming up with someone who could cover the seventh inning?

  4. does this mean the Mets do not improve the Bullpen?

  5. There will definitely be a suspension. MLB almost has too. Her choice not to pursue charges is not the same as being exonerated from a false claim. On a slightly more productive note. anyone know how to calculate how many games Familia would need to be suspended to delay free agency for a year? if he's going to be suspended might as well get something worthwhile out of it.

  6. I'll take a stab at him still getting 30 games - hopefully, it will be zero games.

  7. Seriously? You hope he gets zero games suspension after abusing his wife?

    He will still be suspended.

Many, many wives drop charges after the fact. Some are coerced.

MLB's "code of conduct" does not require criminal activity.

The league absolutely must make a statement about this type of abhorrent behavior. Men should never hit women. It's not okay.

  8. JP -

In my case, I did not use the word 'hope', but I do feel there will not be any suspension. That is just me.

  9. Hitting women ain't good at all JP, and was wondering when you'd resurface in the blogger comments.

I am with Mack - as a Mets fan, I hope there is no penalty - but getting past that parochialism, whatever he does get hit with will most likely be appropriate and well-deserved.
