“So whaddya think?”
“Whaddya mean? What do I think?”
“Whaddya think about the Mets this winter?
“Nothing.”
“Huh?”
“Nothing.”
“Whaddya mean, nothing?”
“Just that, nothing. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Goose
egg. Nada. A big, long string of nothing.”
“What you’re saying to me is non-sense.”
“Cute.”
“I have my moments. To continue, nothing you
make is sense.”
“I think nothing about the Mets because they
are doing nothing. They are sitting around making a grand total of no action.
So there ain’t nothing to think about.”
“They’ve got have their reasons.”
“I thought that too. I said it was the
holidays. They were off playing Santa Claus, or something like that. I figured
it’s New Years. They’re at the gym fulfilling their resolutions. I figured it’s
January. It’s too cold to make a deal. I’m running out of reasons.”
“There’s gotta be something.”
“I’ll tell you what. I’m going to stand up here
and give you my Mets report.”
“Careful. Do you think your heart can stand
it?”
“Okay, here’s my Mets report. This is just
in. I have a man who is right down there on the field at Citi Field. He’s
giving me this exclusive report that grass is actually growing there.”
“Wait a minute, I’ve gotta take notes.”
“I’ve also got a rep who is a fly on the wall
up in the executive offices. He’s telling me that most definitely the paint on
that wall is actually drying.”
“You’re scooping every reporter in town.”
“Here’s another one from my man hanging out
near the water cooler that is in the kitchen. He says there is some water there
that he thinks is, in the very near future, just about to boil.”
“Exciting stuff.”
“I don’t know what else I can say. There ain’t
nothing happening with the Mets. Maybe the problem really was Christmas. The
holiday spirit just stuck. Sandy’s sitting around doing nothing but having a
Christmas carol running through his head.”
“What one’s that?”
“Silent Night.”

Here's what Think:
ReplyDeleteThey have 4 Pitchers who ere shut down at the end of last Year---Harvey, Wheeler, and deGrom Faced a Surgeon more recently than they faced a batter.
3 or the 4 Infield "Starters" were Spine Surgery Patients...Duda "appeared" for a short while as a player---Wright and Walker have yet to play, post Surgically.
I flat out believe that Wright is finished. I also believe that at least one of the pitchers will hit a glitch in their recovery. as a more general overview, THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY HAVE until they roll out and spend a few weeks playing baseball.
I'd have prefered that they opt out on Walker PLUS either Duda or Bruce...if not all three. Walker is oddly the most easily defended move because of their depth and experience concerns, and the reality of the David Wright risk---- is it odd that they are covering one Back Surgery/Neck Surgery risk with another of the same???...granted, Walker's is thought to be "less serious".
So... given that they did re-sign Duda, Walker, Bruce.... I'm hapopy that they kept their "powder" dry for a time when they have defined their health and their needs more clearly. I'm hoping their health concerns will be manageable and cure-able via trade.
...and what would've the Bruce, and Walker combined $31 million have solved..INSTEAD of bringing them back?...add the Duda money...what could you buy with that money?
ReplyDeleteIt's funny...
ReplyDeleteI was interviewed by a St. Louis Cardinals blog (which will be published in March) and I was asked what the Mets have done in the off season.
I told them if they ask 100 Mets fans what the Mets have done, 95 would tell them 'nothing'...
And yet...
They signed one of the top free agents in the market and one of the top 5 bats in the game...
Yoenes Cespedes
Mack...they did make the one move the absolutely needed to make. I conmsider the off-season a success!
ReplyDeleteIn-Season moves have more direct impact than Hot Stove Moves...generally

ReplyDeleteI put my old General Manager brain back in my head and I think I know what Sandy is trying to do here.
First, he loves to let the market come to him.
Second, the only need that is etched in stone right now is at least one more ++ relief arm. Past that, the team has to come to him. Camp will tell a lot about his players.
He also knows that, in a pinch, either or both Gsellman or Lugo could wind up back there on opening day.
He also doesn't want to panic until the ruling comes in on Familia.
Lastly, he doesn't want to offer a 2-year contract to anyone over 30.
Based on all this... I pencil in 6 relievers for the April team (with Familia watching the games at home with his wifey on the telly)...Reed, Robles, Edgin, Smoker, Goeddel, and "somebody" that shines coming out of spring training.
Mack do you look at Signing a Free agent and re-signing a player you had as the same thing?
ReplyDeleteI mean If you re-sign walker or you sign a edwin encarnacion (just as a example) would you view the moves similar?
I say this because most fan would say a re-sign is not an improvement over what you had...
Eddie -
ReplyDeleteCespedes was a free agent. He was gone and available to sign with any other team. Other teams were after him. The Mets could have either lost this guy to another team or turned their back to him when he opted out. They did not.
You re-sign a player when they are still under contract. Like Lagares, not Cespedes.
At least this is my definition.
@Eddie -- exactamundo! The team is net worse than they were last year -- no Blevins, no Salas, no Colon and others.
ReplyDeleteMack
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely correct that the Mets did something huge in signing Cespedes.
In order to clarify the Mets fans you refer to that state that "the Mets have not done anything this off-season"...
I believe they are actually answering the question:
Have the Mets done anything to improve the team from last year and address the needs last year's team demonstrated as important to close the gap with its competitors?
I know we speculate in "the now" but after Sandy inked cespedes, I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until I see what team they are sending north.
