Mack Ade – The Immediate Future of Mets Pitching

Good morning.

This was a tough weekend to be a Mets fan. They went to bed Thursday night a first place team only to have their top three starters, Noah Syndergaard, Jake deGrom, and Matt Harvey, come up with no wins in the next three games in dreaded Miami.
The three pitchers mentioned above combined for 19.1 innings pitched, gave up only four earned runs, and struck out 22 batters You know what I preach all the time. Give me starters that give you seven innings an outing and give up three or less runs. The numbers this past weekend were way ahead of this objective.

The problem was that the relief pitchers in this game pitched a combined 6.1 innings, gave up six runs, and struck out six.

Yes, both Robert Gsellman and Zack Wheeler also had tough outings earlier that week, but the heart of this team is the big three listed above.

It seemed like the entire Mets bullpen caved at the same time. And the last two you would have expected to blow up would be either Fernando Salas or Addison Reed. But was this, as most Mets writers and bloggers have written, a complete destruction of the Mets pen?

Yes Sales and Reed gave up five runs in a combined 1.1 innings pitched, but only one other reliever (Josh Edgin) gave up a run (in 1.2-IP) in these three mentioned games. In fact, the combined stats for Josh Smoker, Hansel Robles, Rafael Montero, and Jerry Blevens were 5-appearances, 3.1-IP, 0-R, 0.00.

No, it was a bad weekend, but I would open the gate and let either Salas or Reed onto the playing field any day of the week.

Bad weekend, but not the end of the world.

  1. Hi Mack:

Couldn't agree more about the bullpen. Every bullpen is going to have it's bad "weekend", that's why the relief pitcher mentality has to be forget about the last game and be ready to go tomorrow. Hopefully the addition of Famillia soon will get everyone slotted back to their regular slots and next Monday we can be talking about the relief pitching getting back on track.

  2. Thanks for your comments Jeff.

Yeah, I think when Reed returns to the 8th inning guy, Sales becomes the 7th inning guy, and Robles and Blevens splits the 6th, things will immediately get better

  3. The problems this weekend were compounded by a manager who was handed a fresh arm but continued to tax the already exhausted ones.

  5. Collins allowing Salas to stay after the walk was bad, not having Blevins ready, was worse.

Keeping Salas to pitch to Stanton after he gave a 2 run hr to Yelich, that was downright stupid.

It may be less than 15 games in but in August, you will be thinking about games you should have won and didn't.

Lets hope once Familia comes back that everything will fall back in place.

  6. Primarily Familia's fault, and let no one forget that. You can't fault Sandy for not getting another reliever, because he may have known this would be just 15 games. Had it been clear his suspension was 30+, maybe Sandy gets another quality arm. Familia's failings have probably cost this team 2-3 wins already.

That said, I still am baffled, until someone defends Collins, how he pitched to Osuna in the 16th inning with only the pitcher on deck. Collins dodged the mother of all bombs with Osuna just missing a game winning HR.

  7. Thomas, you know me for many years on this blog. I very seldom second guess any decisions that come out of the dugout during the game. No one has any idea how hard it is to make those kind of decisions and every good one makes the manager look like a genius and every bad one makes him look like a schmo.

I am tempered by the fact that their are 162 games for all the teams in the league and, if you are right, and the loss of Familia has cost us 2-3 games already, hopefully he will save a couple of more when he comes back coupled with the fact that other teams will make two or three more mistakes as well.

  8. The loss of Familia plus the stupidity and stubbornness of the manager...

  9. Mack, I can only hope with Familia that his early season "vacation" keeps him fresher for Sept and Oct. He is also much less likely to make the All Star team, so that is another little added slice of rest in a long 2017 season for our closer.

Maybe that makes up those 2 or 3 more games to offset what has already occurred.

  10. I don't know what it is about games in Miami but i have this recurring nightmare of another Marlin walk-off win after another repeating over and over and over or is it just me? One other thing about the Marlins ....their bullpen didn't seem to have the same problem AND their w/o Fernandez or it would have been sweep city. Also were in the 4th year of April torture with Grandy and he now has a BFF in Reyes so just how long do we ride this out?

  11. Tom -

one of my contacts in Binghamton said that Familia is 'loose and has his head on straight'. He also bought steaks for the entire team after his stint there.

    Gary -

We do not have to over analyze the Miami series... they did not win it... we tossed it away

  12. Mack no over analyzing just tired of getting our asses kicked in Miami.
