Palm Beach 3 - St. Lucie 1

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (April 6, 2017) – The Palm Beach Cardinals scored two unearned runs and beat the St. Lucie Mets 3-1 on Opening Day Thursday at First Data Field.

Mets starter Andrew Church logged 5.2 innings and scattered three hits. He allowed two runs, but only one was earned. Chris Chinea’s solo home run in the fourth inning broke a 1-1 tie and put the Cardinals ahead for good.

Palm Beach added an insurance run in the sixth when first baseman Peter Alonso and right fielder Enmanuel Zabala collided on a fly ball off the bat of Edmundo Sosa. Sosa ended up at third base and scored on a single by Danny Diekroeger.

The Mets nearly tied it in the fourth, but Chinea threw out Jhoan Urena at home plate trying to score on an infield hit by John Mora.

Three Cardinals relievers – Jacob Evans, Brennan Leitao and Ross Vance – combined to shut out the Mets over 4.1 innings.

Cardinals starter Junior Fernandez battled control issues over 4.2 innings. He allowed three hits and one run while walking four and striking out five.

The Cardinals got on the board first in the second inning. A wide throw from shortstop Colby Woodmansee let Chinea reach first base to start the inning. Chinea advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a Luke Dykstra two-out single.

Mets catcher Patrick Mazeika briefly tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

Mazeika went 2 for 3 and drew a walk. Zabala also went 2 for 3 with a walk.

The Mets (0-1) and Cardinals (1-0) battle again on Friday at First Data Field. First pitch is 6:30 p.m. Fans can bring two-nonperishable food items and get a free ticket as part of Keep St. Lucie Beautiful Night. There will be a postgame fireworks show.
