Tom Brennan - METS' BEST MINOR LEAGUE HITTER?
I did my article on Mets' Minors Amazins at 8:00 AM.
What, another article? Why not!!!!!!!!!
One amazing minor leaguer not mentioned in that Amazin' article is Tyler Pill, who has a deceptive ERA of 0.00 in 22 innings this year, because he has surrendered 7 earned runs. And almost everyone makes contact against him, with just 8 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Most amazing about Mr. Pill, though, is that he quite possibly is one of the Mets' top 5 minor league hitters right now.
Maybe the best.
Pitchers almost never get to hit in the minors, and we see guys on the Mets who play sporadically who just can't seem to hit when they do get in games (think Juan Lagares, or to a lesser degree Wilmer Flores).
So how does a guy like Tyler Pill stay sharp enough to hit?
I dunno, but in 72 very spread out career at bats, this pitcher, who was a fine hitter in his collegiate days, is a jaw-dropping .375/.395/.500. And, stunningly, just 8 strikeouts!! Imagine if this guy played every day - bat him clean up!!
So many guys in the Mets' minor league system right now are hitting under .200, and/or strike out a ton. Simply put, and sorry to say, they can't hold a candle to Tyler Pill with the bat. Tim Tebow probably watches tapes of Tyler Pill hitting, just a guess.
To me, the Mets should think about Tyler Pill as a back of the bullpen guy - AND PINCH HITTER.
Because one thing is for sure - as my recent OLD MAN HITTING TRACKER series has painfully highlighted Jose Reyes and Curtis Granderson's hitting woes - Tyler Pill is a better hitter right now than the two old men are. And the Mets need all the hitters they can get.
Well, to be fair he's a better hitter than ANYONE on the Mets except their temporary left fielder.
ReplyDeleteNot an overstatement, Reese. If Rick Ankiel could do it, how a bout a guy like Pill who does not strike out like Ricky did?
ReplyDeleteHe could be the Pill that cures what ails us. In the immortal words of Huey Lewis, I want a new drug.
ReplyDeleteThis team needs all the pills it can get its hands on that are not banned substances, Reese.
