Tom Brennan - NEVER ENOUGH PITCHING

Tom Brennan - NEVER ENOUGH PITCHING

I read that Lugo is getting another elbow exam, which sounds ominous, and Matz has a flexor tendon strain, which easily could have him not be ready to start games until mid-May.

Leaving this team with 6 starters right now:

Thor (blister), Jake (healthy but coming off ulnar nerve relocation surgery), Zach (throwing well, but missed 2 years with TJS), Harvey (throwing well, but coming off thoracic outlet surgery), Gsellman (healthy!), and Montero (throwing very well, but coming off an injury-plagued 2016).

Collectively brilliant, but with at least some health concerns.

Assuming Lugo and Matz are not available for a while, if the Mets had to go further down into the system for another starter due to further starter injuries, no one (to my thinking) really seems major league ready in the minors to step in.

Which makes the decision to let Gabe Ynoa go for an undisclosed amount of cash this off-season, due to 40 man roster issues, seem shortsighted.

Gabe is still 23, a career 59-30 in the minors, and 1-0, 6.38 with 17 Ks in 18 innings with the Mets last season.

He was 2-0, 1.98 in 14 innings with the Orioles this spring, starts out in the minors, but could well be called up to start when they need 5 starters in mid-April.

You can never have enough pitching - so it seems shortsighted to not have figured out a way to keep him as insurance, and trade him if/when the starting rotation picture was clearer in mid-2017.

I throw it out there for thoughts.
